Cool. A mid 2012 is quite a different beast from a 2013.

With this in mind an SSD upgrade and a RAM upgrade to 8GB would make a huge difference to the machine.

Running any newer OS-X versions on 4GB is asking for trouble. And if you have a regular hard drive you will have a lot of swapping to HD, which means you will have a slow machine.

I was given a early 2011 MBP, very slow to start up, would take minutes to start and I guess that is why they biffed it.

After alot of research, my issue was the battery, even on power adaptor it was slow but once the battery was changed it was like chalk and cheese.

I now have a SSD and it takes less than 20 sec from cold start to working, from sleep it is seconds.

What location was the server located in?

A 9mbps download speed seems very poor.

Looks like 2.4ghz WiFi. That will easily be your limitation.

Use 5ghz.

Sounds like the hard drive is shot presuming it is a hard drive.

2013 MBPs were all SSD ... but it still may indicate some sort of corruption....
