I just swapped in the failed HDD, booted with ALT held down, and turns out the original HDD is not even being recognised. The WD Blue I did have in there was being recognised so... Don't know what to think now. I will just try an OS X 10.6.7 ISO from the internet archive (a 6 hour download, yay).

Okay trying that now, will update soon. Thanks for continued interest in the problem.

EDIT: Update:

Rufus Snow Leopard iso was actually recognised but resulted in Kernel Panic, and OS X 10.7.2/.4 resulted in white screen.

I've got original DMGs for both the iMac restore and also 10.6 GM. I've made the files available here for the next few days. Do let me know how you get on.

Hi! I'm TheoM, but you know that already. I run Linux mirrors in NZ together with 2degrees. Like a mirror added? PM me!

Yes. PRAM reset invokes the usual double chime, to no effect, and SMC has been reset multiple times. Thanks anyway.

I bet it does. In my machine it came up with the Apple logo, but then I was hit with three beeps spaced three seconds apart continuously WHICH IS NOT A RAM ISSUE. It indicates that TheoM's image is incompatible with my machine, as it is most likely a 10.6.3 image. I need a 10.6.7 or 10.6.8 .dmg for it to be compatible with my iMac it seems.

Potentially yes, but I have no actual way of knowing currently. Because the HDD failed, and I replaced it with a non apple HDD without the temperature sensor built in, Apple Hardware Test only runs as far as the replacement HDD, which fails the sensor test. Thus I have no idea if something else on the main logic board has failed too, like the notorious Radeon HD6000 series video cards...

Mine is the 10.6 GM (i.e. 10.6.0). I can pull down 10.7 from my archives if that works

Oh right, would you happen to have a 10.6.6, 10.6.7 or 10.6.8 image? I think those are the only ones that are going to work. Thanks for the help so far.

Is there a reason 10.7 wouldn't work? It should be able to boot 10.7 or 10.8 since those are supported

It SHOULD be able to boot into 10.7 or 10.8... if they are the original 10.7.0 or 10.8.0. It didn't boot into 10.7.4 or 10.7.2. I will try both images you have though, as anything is welcome at this stage. Thanks again.

I've made a more expansive list of DMGs available at the same place - https://home.theom.nz/Apple/

Okay will check them out tomorrow. Still suspecting that there may be another component at fault in my machine though... Thanks again

When you are creating the USB installers you are using the InstallESD.dmg file from 'shared support' right? Not the App Store download .dmg ?
