I actually think the upgraded iPhoto due later this year will be a good indicator of whether Apple are losing it as far as realy good useability design goes.

Is that a fair comparison?

In windows, you choose from a large range of software, lots of choice. But your comparing that to Applesone default, built in app.

I guess my point is that people put up with annoyances from apple such as buggy software due to overall good user design. if we are looking for clues about whether Apple really do continue to do great user design, then iiPhoto revamp will be a good indicator.

I don't think I really meant to link it to Microsoft by way of comparison, just looking for clues about how the two companies might be doing in terms of UID. Were probably digressing here....

Ah, UI, fair enough. I think the bugs issue is very much overstated. For every post of that, there are others saying it works fine for me. And many bug posts are actually UID posts, a change is made in iTunes, and the user doenst like it, fix that bug. Plus an over expectation as Apple is god, IMO Apple is cool, I like the hardware and both OS's, but its just a PC, and like any PC or PC OS, it has bugs

^In my experience the bug issue is not overstated and has nothing to do with changes in UI.  But I am not the many :)

Though to be fair it could be my ageing hardware.  Until I get a new MBP in a few weeks I won't know for sure.

I am having issues as well, I also suspect hardware is partly to blame and I am evaluating replacements. Haven't decided if I will stay with iMac or move to Windows PC. The choice of hardware for Windows is poor in NZ.

khull: I use windows to the point of having to use it to complete a task (mostly work) and nothing more. When MSFT can manage to release a OS that doesn't bloat over time because of registry entries and DLLs - I'd consider switching back. (Don't get me wrong. Mac has it's own fair share of plist problems but they are far easier to manage and keep tidy)

Although, despite what people say Windows installs always looked better on a beautiful Mac screen.

Since windows 7 or vista apparently registry issues don't affect performance anymore and using registry cleaners can do harm

My hardware is a Late 2013 rMBP, 8GB, 512 SSD, I've had very few issues. I can only rceall 3 issues

1. Copying files to network server drive, cannopt copy as file is in use, old issue
2. Right click a file on my network drive, often beachballs for 30 seconds
3. rMBP startup from cold in 12 seconds, Safari comes up. Now sine Yosemite, Internet not connected, so I wait another 5 to 8 seconds

Thats it, and the first two are old issues.

Maybe it is a hardware issue as these reported issues are never affecting every user. Just some

gehenna:  I'm yet to see on a Windows laptop is the multi-touch trackpad.  Without a great trackpad that comes close to the usability of that of the Mac I just can't move to a Windows notebook.

Most windows laptops in the last few years have multi touch. I can use 2 fingers to scroll, pinch to zoom etc. Its not as polished as apple's though

It is? That's news to me. Get a custom build.

Most of the custom builds I have seen are hmmm lacking finesse, are generally noisy and just not good. But that of course is just my feelings.

Like many things in life, they can be hashed together, or they can be built with care of detail. I'd ask around here for recommended builders. Components are everywhere, and everything, all you need is a good system builder.

I have only found a very small number of windows based Laptops with decent touch pads. The Samsungs were good.

True, particularly when it comes to DIY build your own computer - if I was in the US the selection is huge, the prices are great meaning you can build a computer for either the same or cheaper price as a big OEM. The big question for me is where Windows 10 ends up like with more details arriving in Build 2015 and then compare that 'future vision' by Microsoft and compare it to the vision that Apple gives in WWDC 2015. The big question I have is whether Windows 10 will end up being an unfinished mess with a frankenstein icon sets and the unrefined UI elements such as this example:

As much as Windows does improve there are those small things that annoy me something silly. Microsoft need to start giving a continental about polish and finish - something compiling and not crashing on boot shouldn't be the criteria as to whether a product should be labeled as final and ship to customers.

Yeah I wouldn't exactly call 2 finger scrolling and pinch to zoom "multi touch".  I'm talking 2,3,4, and 5 finger gestures.  There's Trackpad++ for Windows that lets you use the Mac trackpad better than the default Boot Camp driver, but even still it's not great.  "PC" trackpads are just diabolical in comparison.  I even tried the Logitech multi touch trackpad for a while and it wasn't nearly as good.

I liked to good old days of 10.5 and 10.6, not that impresses with 10.9 and 10.10, will be interesting to see how Microsoft stay afloat when they make Windows 10 free considering software is their only real money earner.

The OS has not been a big earner especially in consumer where it is usually obtained with a PC. The big earners are for example Office, Server, Enterprise licences etc etc
