BTR: I liked to good old days of 10.5 and 10.6, not that impresses with 10.9 and 10.10, will be interesting to see how Microsoft stay afloat when they make Windows 10 free considering software is their only real money earner.

I would think Microsoft is trying to shift its revenue stream to services, rather than licenses. Just look at their Office 365 services, Azure etc.

And they have only said that Windows 10 will be free for the first year. Something tells me they will move people over to a subscription based system. Possibly based on a freemium model for Windows.

I think it is high time Microsoft started to turn their boat around. They have not had much wind in their sails while Ballmer was the captain.

Just installed it on my MacBook Pro - still riddled with lots of inconsistencies which I doubt area going to be addressed. The reason why I say that these issues won't be address is because it would require a lot more work than I think Microsoft has time for - the GUI inconsistencies are born out of the different frameworks employed and the amount of work required to bring every aspect of Windows in line would take years not to mention the untold number of applications that might break in the process of modernising it all. One can't predict the future with any certainty but past behaviour is a good indictor of future outcomes - Windows Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1 when they were being developed I had much hope that they would 'smooth things out' but when they were released it was the same mishmash of different UI ideas and nothing done to standardise everything on the same page. Oh well, I'm back to OS X but it was a great experience, it reminds me Bill Hicks and being a hate camel:

Explains the relationship I have with Windows and Microsoft - I get itchy, I wonder "maybe Windows isn't so bad" so I install and a brief interlude with Windows fills me hump with hate and I'm good for another year.

You're right about the focus on services and making money that way, but I think this is one of the most frequently mis-understood parts of the windows 10 announcements. My understanding is that *upgrading* will only be free during the first year. After that you will need to pay if you want to upgrade from win7/8 to windows 10. But they won't start charging people who have already upgraded some sort of fee to keep using it after that year is up.... At least that's not my understanding. Not sure if that's what you're suggesting, but I very much doubt it. It seems very similar to the windows 8 upgrade deal where you could get it for $40 initially.

I'm not sure why the free for a year thing continues to have holes picked in it and turned into something negative.

Its FREE to upgrade to Windows 10 and once you've got it installed it will keep up to date for FREE.

No trialware/ransomware etc no subscriptions its just free.

Edit: may or may not have used that serial earlier to get 8 upgrade... Wonder if that matters...

no. Its free from currently supported versions, which doesn't include Vista, "only" 7, 8, 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1

try it on a PC with a natural user interface with Touch.

I agree. Its traction, kickstart what I see as the new invigorated Microsoft. And I say that as now an Apple user, but Windows is still alive and well in my home

Well, it appears that with 10.10.3 Apple has added support for two step authentication for Google services. I have to admit that one of the things Apple has done well when compared to Microsoft is their willingness to support more than just their own service and how ones local account isn't explicitly linked to ones online account - that you don't have that laborious linking up and conversion thing that takes place when you want to add support for online cloud support with Windows 8.x and up.

Are you still using a Mac that has a moving hard disc drive?
I ask because I recently upgraded my own mac to a 512G SSD and the difference was dramatic.
No more spinning wheel.

I suspect that Apple is, internally, developing and testing only using Macs with SSDs and assuming everyone else has the same.
Apple have been known to leave old technology behind quicker than most.

Yosemite and iOS8 are their worst releases yet for software quality.
It's a pretty good indication of where their "laser like" attention hasn't been focused over the last year.
This, I have no doubt, will be fixed and their core OS's will be brought back to the quality we expect.

I did one thing better and bought an Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook - waiting for the Courier Post guy to drop it off.
