Hi. i'm fairly new to these forums but i thought this might be a good place to post up a question that ive been wondering

Ok, so i have a long commute to and from my work. It's about an hours drive. It sucks, big time. For a few months i'd switch my brain off as i drove and just listen to the radio. But then a work colleague said i should look into pod casts. I didn't even know what one was...

Anyway to cut a long story short i'm kind of looking for some good local pod casts. I've grown weary of all the American ones and am looking for NZ/Australian or Oceanic  pod casts

Does anyone have any good suggestions? I want something funny and engaging.

I regularly listen to podcasts from Radio NZ National (Kim Hill, media watch, etc) and from Monocle 24.  Monocle is (IMO) a great international magazine based in London and they launched a radio station with general and special interest shows.  Also TEDTalks.

Not NZ or Aus but I enjoy the Friday night comedy from BBC Radio 4:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/fricomedy/

New epsiode weekly, it alternates every 8 weeks or so between the Now Show and the News Quiz, both of these are a satirical p*sstake out of current affairs, politicians and life in general.

(Normally updated Sat morning NZ time, but varying somehwat with the Olympic specials)

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Peter Griffin's SciBlogs: http://sciblogs.co.nz/tosp/
NZ Tech Podcast: http://nztechpodcast.com/ (has gone down a bit in technical and content quality lately, but I find myself listening each week)
Plenty of good programmes on Radio NZ National, esp Simon Morton's This Way Up: http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/thiswayup

But, I'm big into BBC Radio 4 programmes - huge range to choose from and quality listening.
Also, ABC (Aust) has some good science, technology & business shows

Just remembered this: The Infinite Monkey Cage, http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/timc

I
t's a science based show, but often has the most genuine unrestrained laughter I've heard on any programme. The current series has just finished, but I think a new one is due in not too long. You can download previous shows from the page above.

If you want funny and engaging get The Moth. Don't be fooled by some of the descriptions, 95% of the stories are delivered with warm humor and are essentially comedies. Maybe pick the obvious humor stories to start and get into the less obvious ones later:

Not a big RNZ listener but a friend put me on to the fact RadioNZ now have RSS feeds for their podcasts. Items have a useful description so you can just pick out interviews or whatever that are of interest:

Hey guys,

wow thanks for all the suggestions! Looks like i've got myself alot of listening to do :D

I found a pod cast tonight called podd socks that i've listened to a few so far while i was out for a jog, and it's pretty good. www.poddsocks.com it seems to be an aussie but it made me laugh so i'l probably tear through them and then get to some of the above. maybe the science one if its funny. haha

appreciate the posts. keep'em coming, i like the discovery of new audio gems

Always worthy of a recommendation, The History of Rome.

As the title suggests, but with humour and a wonderful narrative arch.

The content from TWiT.tv is good for geeks. I specifically listen to TWiT & Security Now.
