We just had a vehicle pull up outside our house, and the driver took a picture with a camera before driving off. I was upstairs, so didn't have time to run down to ask what the heck he was up to. However, I did manage to write down his licence plate. Is there any way I can use this to look up the owners details?

it is not so easy anymore and you can elect to have your information withheld from public.

I would call the police just in case it's a stolen car or if there's anything suspicious going on. Pays to check.

I can tell you what type/year of car it is from the registration... but not who owns it.

It's not, but there must be a reason for someone to stop outside your house and take a photo, then drive away.

It's not like the OP's house is on fire... (hope not!)

We've had someone do this to us a few years ago in an old house. Pulled up out front, sat there for a few minutes, Took a photo then drove off at speed. We got the plate number and everything, contacted the police and they followed it up. Turns out, he had done it to quite a few other houses in the area, and while he was sitting in the car before taking the photo, he had in fact been masturbating according to other people who had this happen to them.
Report it just in case.

I doubt it. I can even think of a couple of legitimate reasons as to why someone may be doing that in front of our house. But for my own piece of mind, I'd be interested in finding out exactly who the driver was.

Thanks for the tip. You do have to pay (although its minimal), but more importantly is the following :-

Personally, I would be far, far more suspicious of the motives of those who want to look up the owners of car licence plates than I would of those who take photos of houses.

I know some people here have suggested going to the Police, but as there are a few legitimate reasons for doing what this driver has done, its not something I'd like to bother them with. I was more curious as to whether this information was publicly available.

+1 on that. When someone else calls with the same thing they will have reason to investigate.

Why anyone would bother doing this when google street view is available I don't know.
