Hi guys

I've got a simple question, I will be down in Wellington at New Year's and need an urgent advice where to go for a nice meal with my parents (yeah we doing nice old road trip around North Island, and will be in Wellington for two nights). Something nice in Wellington CBD, but not ridicules expensive.

I guess I should worried a little earlier, but last minute changes to the trip are never good :)

So any advice is appreciated.

For value + atmosphere + great food you can't go past Restaurant 88 on Tory Street....number 88 Tory if you didn't get that already. Check their website.

A lot of places will probably be booked already, or if they're "no booking" places they'll be very busy on the night but I suspect you'll find somewhere without too much of a problem.

What sort of food/place are you wanting to go to? Lively and loud? Quiet? European/Other?

I'm after something in between of been too loud and really quite. So that three of us can talk without shouting and don't really have that awkward silence in restaurant where you afraid to laugh :)

European/kiwi food is a first choice, but would not mind if restaurant can offer some asian food too.

Restaurant 88 is Vietnamese, very nice food. Also there is entertainment on the waterfront for 4 hours prior to NYE and then Fireworks over the water this year, so you could take a stroll straight down Tory St after dinner and watch it.

Cafe Istanbal in Cuba street, good food, reasoanble pricing and relaxed atmosphere. Often see politicians in there eating so it must be good.

I'm a huge fan of Pizzeria Napoli on Courtenay Place. There are so many good places in and around the Golden Mile that you'll be able to stumble across something.

Cosa Nostra in Tinakori Road is great, 5 minute taxi from central Wellington. One red dog on the waterfront, and the big hotels are usually surprisingly good too. Suggest you book a place, it'll probably be busy.

That turkish place mentioned is good. Flying Burrito Brothers on Cuba's excellent but can be very loud. You'll need to narrow down the type of food you want more, for general kiwi stuff like I said the big hotels are good.

Can't really go wrong with Cuba St, plenty of choice that you will for sure find something you'd fancy.

Courtenay Place is the main entertainment street. Cuba St also good though....I'd recommend checking Courtenay Place options and then branching out to Tory/Vivian/Cuba streets if you don't find what you're looking for. Blair and Allen streets are also full of restaurants and directly off Courtenay Place.

All good suggestions, although I would caution against walking in somewhere on NYE. Most places do special menus for that night and bookings are essential, especially places on the waterfront and on Courtney.

My recommendations would be: 88 (European Vietnamese), Tasting Room, Shed 5, Dockside, Arbitrageur, Cosa Nostra

That is true! A friend of ours from overseas once had the mixed grill...he said he felt like the more he ate the more someone under the table was pushing food up onto the plate!

Boulcott street bistro is great. They don't take bookings but if you thing and ask they can tell you the best times to come in.
