Hi all,

I am in the process of downsizing and am looking to sell a good amount of DVDs, possibly upwards of 200.

I would normally go the TradeMe route, but a lot of them are imported from overseas and consequently don't have a NZ sertificate, meaning that TradeMe won't allow them to be sold - I have tried in the past, and they have been known to delete the auctions.

I lived in the UK for a while, and they had places like Music Magpie you could sell a job lot to, but I've not found anything similar here.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry, what do you mean by a 'certificate'? Do you mean content rating?
What if you just listed all the titles in one text block and a simple picture of all the DVD's stacked?

Do you have any second hand Music/DVD dealers in your area?

Yes, they are not NZ rated - although they are of course rated overseas.

I tried doing just a text list - they must have people looking through the bulk DVD auctions, as they got deleted that way too!

I don't know if there are any second hand dealers - though I doubt it!

If they're not rated, then distributing them opens you to a $3000 fine, or $15000 if you're a company. You should really submit one of them for rating, then you can buy a bulk lot of stickers to add to each one.

BUT I just read the following;

Would you qualify for exemption or are all these titles very objectionable ;-0 ?
Might pay to see how much the charges are for these labels as I doubt the above people would want to facilitate a private sale !

EDIT: Just saw how much it costs to get a DVD classified, so scrap that idea ! (1k+)

All these places won't touch a DVD without a rating sticker.

It's crazy really - I know of at least 4 places in the US and UK who have no issue with foreign rated discs - I wonder if our laws are just that much different..

Selling imported or second had DVDs and games in New Zealand.

"If your DVD does not show a New Zealand label, you will need to get a label for it, unless it falls under the exempt categories listed in the Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Act 1993."

It's not you that needs the exemption, the film has to qualify for an exemption. Very few films do, they're mostly for like film festivals and stuff.

used dvds are near-worthless.

a few months ago a friend sold some to cash convertors, he got $4 each.

last week they offered $1 each

as for labels, if a film has already been classified in nz, the imported version should be ok too ?

if so, you should be able to get classification labels without having to submit the film ?

anecdote;
many, many years ago when laserdisc was the serious film collectors medium of choice, i imported a copy of michael powell's peeping tom.

this got held back by customs who had it on their banned list (which the film was for many years), fortunately for me tvnz has just screened the film a week or so before...

I would hate to know how much getting a label would cost for each film. They are probably not worth selling.

So as already stated, essentially selling/trading to anyone a DVD/Blu-Ray (and I think Games) without an OFLC sticker is illegal - it's okay to own one you've imported (although the importation comes with the restrictions of the decency rules - the rule that bans extreme violence etc).

I'm in a similar situation, a reasonable sample of my DVD collection is purchased in Australia (while living there, or imported), and ~50% of my Blu-Ray collection was purchased from Amazon/HMV UK (yay Region B!).

The way I read the rules, if it's already been classified in NZ, you can request that OFLC send you the relevant sticker and you'll be okay, (an example would be if you purchased Moneyball in Australia, and it's the identical case/DVD that went through classification - 99.9% of the time these days), what you may get stumbled up on, is if you purchased said DVD in the UK and it contains different scenes and/or special features, that rating may not be valid.

I never got clarification from OFLC, but that was my understanding based on their website a few years ago. If you are serious about selling them - even if you are likely to get next to nothing for it, you should seek clarification from OFLC.

I wasn't after making heaps of money - just wanted a little bit of spending money and the chance to get rid of them. I don't mind keeeping them if there's really no way, but I thought there might have been - it would appear that it's not that simple!
