I have received many press releases for Swipe HQ Reader, including about it being available overseas - the last was from 11th July 2013 saying "Optimizer HQ’s Swipe Reader will be introduced to 31 markets in Europe and nine markets in South East Asia, next month."

But this never seems to actually materialise in New Zealand... I asked them why is this not available here yet.

I'd heard a few rumors about Swipe basically having to start from scratch again as they'd had merchant accounts revoked. No idea how true this is, maybe somebody else can confirm/deny it.

While I think it is an interesting solution to a common problem, if I was about to purchase something from someone using a smartphone in the transaction loop I would promptly go and shop elsewhere as there is no way of knowing that the transaction may or may not be fraudulent.

I don't want to risk my card in some random persons ghetto card processing setup. I wouldn't type the card details in on an untrusted computer so why would I give someone even more data by swiping it in that?

Proper GPRS terminals are not that expensive to rent now.

Here's what I got from SwipeHQ:

Each market takes up new technology at different rates of adoption.

Manas [CEO] advises that the European and Asian markets are more advanced and more aggressive in their uptake of this technology.

In New Zealand, Swipe Reader has so far passed the required EMV Council – Level 1 & Level 2 certification for this technology to enter the market. This is a global certification.

The current status is to conclude the final stages of formalities with a local banking partner which will allow Swipe Reader to enter the market.

Regarding this specific product, I am not convinced it's a "New Zealand" project, seeing there are other similar projects around the world, such as Square and the above noted iZettle. A situation not much different to the countless number of "WiFi LED lights" that pop around the market.

How would you feel about going to a kiwipay.com url (they have all the relevant certificates etc) from your own smartphone, using your own data connection?

Nahh, too much effort.... I can bump the reader for under 80 bucks, and bump it with a pin for more than 80.

Turnover at these markets is already slowed enough by people paying with cash, URL's and typing things and smart phones would slow it down even more and is a step backwards.
