Apparently they did a lot of market research before launch to find out what was important to people in a petrol station. I must be the only person in New Zealand who would have answered 'A return to 80c/L petrol' because instead we got coffee machines and DVDs.

Just be thankful it didn't total $17.85 and you paid by cash. It would have cost you $17.90!

As do the part-cents that are rounded out in thousands of transactions a day, but just see how doing anything about that turned out for Peter, Michael and Samir :P

Careful, you might unwittingly expose the evil hacker plot to round of fractions of a cent - then blame it all on the davinci virus.

There is obviously some rounding going on here, but it does not appear to be clear what is being rounded,

I would actually follow this up with them and ask them to explain the calculations that did to get you final price,

Sounds like Gus Gorman has infiltrated Z,( bonus points for anyone who gets the reference)

I'd be interested in their response. I suspect there's rounding in the $/litre calculation to $2.23 (Which would give $17.8846 for 8.02 litres), plus then rounding-up of that value, which would give $17.89. It's a bit tricky to do both, though. A more specific calculation for the per litre value, at $2.229 would give $17.87658, which rounded would be $17.88. Thus, the 1 cent discrepancy.

And yeah, good on Gus for inspiring his late-90s counterparts that didn't have to deal with a certain boyscout ;)

I did the calculation with 8.025 litres and it came out bang on, perhaps that's where the rounding happens.

2013 .. mmm shiney!  You "tweaked" it yet ?  (exhaust, airbox, air-filter,  pulling the P.A.I.R. emissions system off ?)
