Having a conversation with Trademe about the now required 'in trade' icon that is supposed to show alongside the member name on the listing. It sits to the right of the 'AV' icon.

My problem is that this 'in trade' icon doesn't scale like the others, e.g AV, when one uses ctrl- + to increase the text size. If I start from the smallest (unreadable!) size it will scale up for 4 clicks but on the fifth, it turns to two pairs of chevrons.

It does this on 8.1 update IE11, both desktop and 'metro, and FF. Also on Vista IE9. Also Chrome.

TM have said to enable active scripting (javascript) and this is ticked. Also to clear temp internet files - done.

They also said to make sure the latest ver of java is installed as this is the software that 'makes the buttons work'. I have uninstalled java for security reasons but the download link they provided says that java does NOT work with the 'metro' version of IE. That stuffs TM I guess!

But they didn't explain how the 'AV' and star icons scale up and down with no problem on all my tests.

Sorry for the long diatribe but I wonder if some of you good folk could see if it is just my three browsers on three different computers, plus two other people, that have this problem, . Maybe say whether java is installed as well.

Test listing http://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/components/hard-drives/laptop/auction-745936330.htm

Can anyone see the in trade icon scale up???

There's no Java there. They surely are mistaking "Javascript" with "Java"?

They could not be more wrong. It is not the first time I have heard a technical support line making this mistake.

I have uninstalled java for security reasons but the download link they provided

How many machines have TradeMe technical support installed Java on lol facepalm nightmare.

It upscales in opera, but in firefox it doesn't, just turns into arrows. It is a PNG image, but looks like they possibily maybe using javascript on it. But it is a trademe website/programming problem.

They seem to be trying to be clever with sprites, and not doing it the way GZ does it (with Aptimize) either.

And are they doing something really different with this one compared to the star and 'AV' one?

I only see the chevrons when viewing it on my MacBook Pro retina display, regardless of zoom level (using Chrome). If I drag the window onto a non-retina external monitor, the image displays as expected.

Yes.  The In Trade one is a sprite, the AV and Stars are just image elements.

You need to be put through to their technical people, their frontline call/contact centre staff probably won't have the technical knowledge to understand, as that is not what they deal with. If you refer their technical staff to this thread, it should be obvious to them, and they should be able to fix it.

looks like their sprites are misaligned for the regular and 2X versions

http://www.trademe.co.nz//Images/Common/sprites-v2.5.png and http://www.trademe.co.nz//Images/Common/sprites2x-v2.5.png are the two sprites, if you have a look at the very bottom you will see the 'offending chevron'.

* if I go into the dev tools and switch from the 2x to the regular image, then the 'in trade' logo looks ok again
* alternatively, if I change the background-y to -1180 px (from -1200) then it shows properly

@mattwnz - There doesn't seem to be any direct contact link to tech staff so I just emailed from the Contacts page. I thought that the content of my email would mean someone would forward it to the techos - silly me.

@Regs - now I have some REAL ammo to send their way! Thanks for the time, skill and effort. TM should employ you!!
