I was just calculating the amount of mobile phones I have owned and i think i'm about 60 now, whats your number?

by the way im guessing cos' my memory aint spot on.

and just for the lulz,

first phone was alcatel one touch max, back when it was 20c a txt, no camera on board, no colour screen, no internet, no polyphonic ringtones, no 3g, crazy

current phone is iPhone 6 Plus, free text, 8mp camera, 1080p colour screen, 4g internet, HD audio, apps, touch id sensor, mobile wallet, crazy

isn't it amazing how far we have come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep them until they die.
My current one cost $19 at New World.
I make about 1 call per week.

EDIT To me buying a new cellphone every year is just as crazy as buying a new car every year - and you guessed it - I've owned 3 cars in 20 years

Only ever owned 4 in my life.

3 x Nokias between 2000 and 2011
1 x Galaxy S4 Clone
1 x Zopo 980+

Never felt I was lacking anything. Never did buy into the whole upgrade my phone every 6 months game.

Wow, I'm going to be an outlier on this thread so far. I think I've had 30, mostly smartphones, and I might be forgetting a few in that count.

Too many, probably 20+ in 15 years. First was a bring yellow Philips Savvy now an iPhone 6.

my question is why have those that have owned 10+ owned so many? do you have a habit of damaging them or do you have to have the latest and greatest Iphone 6 then 6+ etc etc

im on my 5th.

I have owned 3. I still use my first one as my alarm because it's loud and hard to sleep through, unlike my current phone that tries to wake me by whispering.

Mobile phones have always been a hobby for me, fixing them, learning them, teaching others how to make the most of them.

and then there is jailbreaking and rooting. and custom roms and apps.

I have owned many iphones and androids and nokias over the years, also some siemens, sony ericsson, lg, panasonic, htc, palm.

I lived rurally for many years, not much to out there so i brought phones and played with them.

10. First a sagem thing you couldn't text on because you had to hold down the number to cycle through the letters. Then a 3310, then a nokia cool phone that had a camera and maybe even 3g. Then a really cheap nokia that made me wish I had the 3310 around because the cool nokia broke, then a nokia phone I had to buy in Thailand on a business trip because noone would/could sell me a charger that fitted my phone. They probably saw me coming. Then I got another cool nokia on contract, then a huawei something rubbish on 2 degrees contract which did get me into Android development. Then a Huawei u8800 which I also developed for and then another huawei which annoyingly turned out to be not as good as the u8800 despite getting ICS. I developed kernels for that too. Then I got a Huawei windows phone which was great and now I have my current Samsung Ativ S which I am proud to say I have had for more than a year now and won't be changing unless it breaks. I am not counting the n9 I got given or the HTC 8x which got returned due to malfunction and was bought because I didn't realize how cheap it was to get a phone repaired when the ativ USB port broke.

Mostly I think it is because I liked shiny things and got bored and a few due to circumstance or breakage. Not great reasons to have so many phones in 12 or so years. That is why I am proud to have kept the Sammy for a year and won't be upgrading it in the foreseeable future.

Better features, better productivity

Camera is an important consideration as my phone has effectively replaced my compact digital camera.

Bigger screen/faster/smoother operation - I now do so much more on my phone; emails, media consumption, banking, trademe, research, navigation etc... My previous phones struggled with a lot of this.

My upgrade cycle - around 15-20 since 1996
