I noticed a new series, Constantine, that looks like the sort of thing I would enjoy.

At the moment it is on TV One's Watch First program, something that seems wholly pointless because the quality available is very poor.

What I cannot work out is (a) what's the point of Watch First and (b) when Constantine will be on normal TV one.

There are SO many programs on now, on so many channels and formats, that it is becoming increasingly hard to keep track of them. It is made even harder by things disappearing mid season, then reappearing later without adequate publicity and without say My Sky seemingly able to reliably carry Series Link over to the series after a break.

http://lemontv.co.nz (my toy site) will track all the online NZ channels for you...

I still use mythtv which matches by series title and works fairly well, but we don't use it all that much anymore with netflix etc

It seems to be the lower rating shows where they don't want to spare infomercial time to slot them in.

Orange is the new black, Shameless to name a couple of reasonably niche popular market viewers that have been shunted to online viewing only.

Or could be the cheaper transport cost other than broadcast

To encourage viewing locally vs pirating (streaming from overseas).  They pay for the rights, and then dont show it for half a year, people are increasingly going to 3rd party streamers and watching it immediately.  The mentalist is a good example of this.

Yeah, last night we noticed that season 3 of Major Crimes was on Watch First, but they only have episodes 7 and 8 availble to view. We are seriously hoping it is about to start on TV1 as we'll be mighty annoyed if we've completley missed out on the season so far! No where do they say when it is going to air, if at all.

Or they could just ... only buy rights for things they intend to air. But whatever; I don't have a free-to-air antenna at all, and my old Sky dish apparently only has an LNB capable of picking up the Sky transponders, not the satellite FreeView transponders (I tried it with a decoder I scored for free off a colleague who switched to terrestrial). Basically, all my TV is now internet TV.

I find it interesting you conflate piracy with streaming from an overseas source. Piracy means I "stole" it by downloading it for free. Streaming from overseas means I paid for something I could have just downloaded for free. You could argue contract semantics with me all day, but I feel I have satisfied my moral obligations. Someone else's dumb/outdated business decision is not my problem.

Cannot wait for the day TVNZ ceases to exist, such a terrible incompetent waste of taxpayers money.

Definitely not the case re the LNB , it is designed to pick up
all transponders .
Unfortunately the quality is poor( and imho the content is going the same way on FTA)

They only get 10% of their funding from the govt.
The reason they are so crap is that they have to be a commercially driven almost self funding channel.
I expect the 'watch it first' thing is a way of buying content to stop the opposition from getting it.

I makes you weep when you see 'proper' state funded broadcasters overseas - ABC (Australia) BBC UKetc and compare to what we have.
By not being ratings obsessed they actually have a chance of making decent homegrown product - I dont mean crap reality TV programs either! But content that actually shows their national identity.
Usually means that the news programs are actually interested in reporting news and breeding real journalist/reporters as well - rather than selling soundbites and sensationalism (and adverts).

Surely if this is what they want to do, streaming it in HD would be a sensible thing to do?

I dont disagree with you, for half a second I considered putting in "pirating/parallel importing".  I think we can all agree that if the rights holder sold it to be Free to Air in a specific country, that by circumnavigating that you are (at least on civil level) stealing.  I think TVNZ should be commended for moving with the times, as opposed to sticking its head in the sand.

Surely if this is what they want to do, streaming it in HD would be a sensible thing to do?

Dont disagree with that either, send them a letter (best of luck!!)

Possibly not. Either way, I know the receiver picked up some scrambled transponders (which I assume were the Sky ones) but nothing else.

$11 million is chicken feed in the scheme of government spending.

I concur. I think a more accurate description is parallel importing.
