As per the title, I'm looking for recommendations for a reasonably quiet jug.

I'd prefer real world experience over marketing promises.

If anyone suggests a Russell Hobbs Whisper Kettle, I'll have the geekzone secret service deal to you

I have a Breville BKE700 which is quite quiet, and the quietest one I have owned. It has a grill thing on the bottom of it which I believe does something to the bubbles .About $170 retail, and half that when on sale. Although it has developed a problem open button where it sticks after about 2 years. Jugs don't seem to last more than 2 years I find.

My Zip glass kettle/jug seems quiet to me but I am a bit deaf, so maybe check it out yourself first.

Ditto, but our button stuck almost immediately and, from memory, I shaved it to stop it sticking.

We currently have a Sunbeam ke7450 that is not as quiet.

It could be worth paying for the Consumer review of kettles as it scores noise.

I would love to find a quiet kettle as well, but, especially if it is made of metal, I doubt whether one exists. It just seems impossible to overcome the cavitation noise caused by those exploding bubbles. Our Hobbs one (sorry, GZ secret police) was reasonably quiet for about 6 wks but is as noisy as hell now.

The glass one is probably better as it wouldn't resonate as badly as a metal one. The Breville grilled one sounds interesting - will do some googling to see other views on it.

Keep it coming, GZers!

I would LOVE a quiet kettle, but the wifey likes the shiny flash looking metal ones, and looks are far more important that practicality in a woman's world.  Had 3 of the damn things now and every one is just as noisy as the others.  I am not sure of any awesome technology that makes a difference, but from my 'real-world' experience you are going to have to go plastic.

I imagine that the quietest kettle is probably made of plastic but we've only ever bought quiet boiling kettles that have metal exteriors - there can be a lot of plastic inside especially the base and handles - and they have all been much quieter than the plastic kettles we had.

I have a Sunbeam KE9500, glass kettle. It seems quiet to me but I haven't had enough kettle experience to compare with others.

It does however have a powerful blue LED which lights up the switch, handle, and water, which looks absolutely amazing in the dark. Who cares about quiet when you have the sound to go with the light display. It's awesome!

At my last job we bought a "quiet" kettle (cant remember brand sorry), and after a week it was noisier than the standard one it had replaced... I complained and the manufacturer said that was normal, I would have to go through some cleaning process which would quieten it down again and would probably need to be done every week.

Gave up on it and went back to the old kettle.

If you have a kettle that was quiet that has gone loud put some white vinegar in the kettle and leave it to soak for an hour. Top it up with water and boil it. Then do a couple of runs of just hot water and tip it away. #betterlivingeveryone

We have a Breville BKE590 "Quite Boil Technology" kettle (photo below).

Much quieter than a 'normal' electric kettle

Stainless steel.

Whats wrong with a noisy kettle? Put the kettle on, go away and do something else, when the noise stops it's cuppa time!!

Should have said, the kettle is several years old now so BKE590 may not be a current model.  However, I assume a similar model is still available (hence the photo).

Unlike others found, there has been little change in noise level since new.

We do boil up with a quartered lemon added every 2 - 3 months to clean inside of the kettle but that is because we have own water supply that has iron in it.  Looks like new afterwards. Cleans both the stainless and the side 'windows'.

I have had two of these, both were extremely loud.
