My old favorite NZ army socks (winter ones not the green summer ones) have been retired and I need some new ones. I'd like to replace them with the same but I'm not interested in joining the army. Any recommendations for good quality, heavy duty, warm and long lasting woollen socks would be well received.

Surely there are good modern civilian alternatives for winter use? IME Army stuff is built to a price..!

Thorlo socks. You can buy them from amazon or direct from them - shipped via youshop. I suggest the coolmax light hiker socks, but you may want the heavier duty ones. You can probably buy them in NZ, but NZ is expensive.

Their dress socks are what I consider the best business socks available. I buy a new set (6-8 pairs) every 2-3 years.

Wool isn't great IMHO, better than cotton though. You don't want socks that absorb water.

I've had Thorlos, and they are very good socks, but even better are the Drymax dress socks I bought from Shoe Clinic. I got 4 pairs for the price of 3, and they are the best socks I've ever bought. The same 4 pairs are now 3 years old, and still look and feel like they are brand new. Even the Thorlos I bought years ago started to pill and wear away, but the Drymax haven't worn away at all. Pricey, but totally worth it.

I buy Icebreaker socks. Wool. Made in USA with NZ merino. I buy Icebreaker on Amazon because it's cheaper than buying in retail here. And they ship directly.

All my Icebreaker clothing (layers, socks, jackets, leggings - everything) comes from Amazon at much cheaper prices than the store in Wellington. Sometimes 50%. Even if retailers were successful getting the government to add 15% GST on all online purchases it would still be cheaper buying from overseas.

OK, this is weird. I was 100% sure I posted a comment on this thread but it's not here. Someone is probably reading another thread about Chromecast or digital cameras or Radio New Zealand's clock being one second out, and wondering why I felt the need to tell everyone what kind of socks I like... Anyhoo:

How much do you want to pay for a pair of socks? If you want to support a New Zealand company, you could try Swazi. I use their Hunter socks for everything from six day hiking through the bush to wearing in the wellies for an afternoon in the garden and have found them excellent. Their Farm socks are also supposed to be good, but I haven't bought them. Around $25 a pair.

I won't wear wool socks. I come out in a rash if I wear wool.

I buy my normal socks from Marks & Spencer and Drymax socks from makers like Thor Lo for activity wear.

My winter shoes almost all have Goretex linings so they are warm, no need for thick sox.
