And is the Robot division part of X-labs, Google or a separate company under Alphabet?

That name and web address! "Don’t worry, we’re still getting used to the name too!" wink

Seems like an immensely understandable move.

Each venture/company is self contained and can succeed/fail on its own - then can be spun off if they want.

The big boys maintain control over the money and overall control.

Yeah um, I'm not quite sure what to say about it! It kind of scares me that they are using a new TLD like .xyz rather than a traditional TLD, but than again I suppose there is no bigger thumbs up for the new range of TLD's than the worlds biggest internet company using it.

The re-jigging of the company though makes sense and I'm sure it has a nice tax structure thrown in...

Is it part of the advertising company siphoning up data about you?

Then no its not part of Google but Alphabet

This is about helping investors better assess the revenue growth trajectory as well as the capital intensity of the company's more mature versus emerging businesses

n4: I assume Android remains with Google?

Yes
Google retain control of search, ads, maps, the Google Play Store, YouTube, and Android.

Probably my non-tech nature but that seems like the most boring and least game changing press release I have ever read.

"We are creating a group of companies and Google will be one of the group companies. The holding company will be called Alphabet."

Seems very interesting to their Company Secretary perhaps - or maybe I just missed something!

It gives more transparency on financials.

Right now it is unclear how much Google Fiber, self driving cars, etc cost and how profitable or not to its various non-advertising businesses are.

fun easter egg:

on the announcement page, click on the full stop after the sentence about drones, and you'll be taken to a promo page for Silicon Valley's (the TV show) Hooli's innovation division :)
(hooli is the company in the show that is basically google)

they will be able to attract more top talent to join their org after this announcement, and probably be able to keep some of the existing talent they have for longer

As far as I can see, the main benefit is that the new structure will have way more flexibility when it comes to raising capital.

Self driving cars, longevity research, advanced robotics, life sciences - any one of those (or others) could lead to a business unit that would require investment to the tune of tens of billions of dollars. While the company might have the cash, they would find it hard to get the idea past their shareholders.

With the new structure, it would be easier to raise money for a new or greatly expanded venture without affecting the ownership or capital structure of the core internet related businesses.
