I have just been enjoying Checkpoint with John Campbell. While it is apparent that RNZ does not have the resources that are available to TV3, I do think this is very much a portent of the future. I have also been watching Ziln and thinking about dinosaurs. The animated discussion on other threads in regard to the efforts of Netflix and others to curb geo-unblocking, also has to do with dinosaurs. There seem to be two kinds of dinosaurs getting in the way at the moment. One is the kind that thinks digital media can be restricted by geographical (read: made up) boundaries. The other is the ostrich dinosaur, head firmly planted in the ground, mumbling about Nielson ratings, insisting there is nothing new happening here, determined to carry on selling advertising for linear TV presenting podgy Australian chefs judging the efforts of anxious kitchen warriors until the last ageing viewer has expired from sheer boredom.

It is easy to dismiss the feeble attacks of an uncoordinated kitten, but streaming TV is the wave of the future, and those who pretend otherwise are just whistling in the dark to persuade themselves that there is no bogeyman out there. Streaming entertainment (or information) from overseas is one aspect of this and no doubt there will be many battles before the rights issues are settled. But unfettered local and national on-line TV designed to appeal to specific niche audiences is the killer app that will spell the end of proscriptive, ad-saturated, dumbed down 'mass' broadcast TV that only rest home residents who can't press the button on the remote will continue to watch.

Ziln even has a new TV 7! It doesn't amount to much yet, mostly just Parliament TV re-runs, but it is the wave of the future. Who needs government funding, or approval, or expensive PR, or anything else when anyone with a webcam and a computer can start their own 'broadcasting' service?

I have seen the future of New Zealand television, and it looks bright.

Must say it's great to hear Campbell again, and he seemed well at ease in the bits I heard from yesterday's show. I'd enjoyed listening to the four podcasts he did (available on the Nat Rad website) over the past few months, including one on the generous levels of tax paid by Apple in NZ.

I tried to check Checkpoint out tonight on Freeview channel 50, as they push in the promo, but that's just the standard Nat Rad channel. I didn't see any video on there - is the video aspect only available via the Youtube channel (and I assume Nat Rad's own website),  not on Freeview?

As I see it, RNZ National is the last bastion of proper journalism, and their service and quality is up there and I think JC has the qualities to take it to the next level in the web aware world, unlike Stuff which is just regurgitated hearsay off farcebook.

Not sure. I found it while checking the RNZ website and just clicked through. It won't be viewable on a radio channel, though.

Video is only on Freeview HD, and a rescan was required for some people on Reddit.

I like both John Campbell and Duncan Garner so I can see myself flicking between them on the bus ride home over the next few weeks before I figure out who I prefer. Duncan's radio show gives a nice lead-in to Story, but my gut feeling is that Story will be gone by the end of the year because the ratings aren't going to be enough to cover the enormous cost of producing it.

It has been apparent for a while now that the future of overseas sourced entertainment content is on streaming services, but the future of domestic news and current affairs is only just starting to become clear. The new format for Checkpoint, the simulcasts between TV3 and Radio Live, the demise of 3D and the upcoming launch of Newshub are signs of what's to come.

What's a Ziln?

Campbell is a bit of a turn off for me, if I am honest. His faux earnestness is annoying. Mind you he's probably better than the alternatives available.

Yah his over earnest inclinations are quite a turn off especially since I've seen him be quite the prat making a fuss and jumping queues in cafes because he was in a hurry.

Russel Brown's column Hard News on Public Address said you had to re-tune your Freeview tuner to pick up the video for NatRad. At least, that's what I thought I read. It was the first I had heard of it.

"Ziln" is NZ's original streaming TV. It's been up and running for about 10 years.

John Campbell's earnestness is genuine. People who think it's fake provide insight in their own expectations of others. That's neither good nor bad....it just is.

Campbell's coverage of numerous events over the years - especially the Christchurch earthquake - proved to me beyond all doubt he is utterly genuine.

Cmon man, seriously? No one is like he is on TV all the time, you'd die of exhaustion. I am not saying he isn't capable of empathy, and perhaps not even a terrible radio/tv presenter, but having actually met the guy, and seen him behave badly in real life, I don't think his halo is quite as polished as you'd like to think it is. I don't trust people who GUSH, and he is a GUSHER.

Yeah serioulsly. I have no problem with gushers. If anything they highlight how emotionally inhibited many of us are.....and we make that THEIR problem somehow. :)

Anyone can have an off day, especially someone under the pressure of being in the public eye. You have no way of knowing what private issues may be affecting someone at any given time. I have corresponded with Campbell, and I also think he is perfectly genuine. If you already don't like someone, it is easy to find faults in their behaviour.

His parents ran a restaurant in the village. Quite, shall we say, eccentric!

I've been in there (it's closed now) before and been one of only two occupied tables at 7pm when a group of 3 or 4 turns up and asks for a table only to be told that they were 'full' (they weren't!). A few other things in that vein - we locals used to find it quite a source of entertainment.

I agree - he gushes. You can say that makes the rest of us emotionally inhibited if you like, but I say having emotional diarrhoea makes him appear just a bit on the odd side. He can be all carey and sharey if he likes, but I really don't like it.

Campbell seems to do some great investigations, and we have to give him credit for asking questions where it seems others don't. I have to admit at times the emotion can get a little... Much, but I believe it's genuinely felt and does social good.

Looking forward to seeing how the video radio fusion work.

Luckily I'm not, but if I were in the public eye, I certainly wouldn't want my parents to be part of the discussion.

Thanks for advice re Freeview channel 50 - will try re-tuning the TiVos and TV tonight to see if that fixes it.

Does this channel 50 broadcast video for the whole of the 1.5 hours of Checkpoint?

It'll be interesting to see if RNZ begins including video with any of its other programmes, given the platform's now in place.
