Hey everyone,

What is the allowance these days? For example, if the speed limit is 50, I know you won't get a ticket for driving 51 or 52. At what speed wiill you be stopped by the police or be snapped up by the roadside cameras? 50 + 10% or 50 + 10km/hr? Just curious, haha.

Not more than 10 kilometres an hour     $30 (hardly ever enforced unless the cop wants an excuse to stop you)
More than 10 kilometres an hour but not more than 15 kilometres an hour     $80 (usual 61/50 KPH zone)
More than 15 kilometres an hour but not more than 20 kilometres an hour     $120
More than 20 kilometres an hour but not more than 25 kilometres an hour     $170
More than 25 kilometres an hour but not more than 30 kilometres an hour     $230
More than 30 kilometres an hour but not more than 35 kilometres an hour     $300 (loss of licence )
More than 35 kilometres an hour but not more than 40 kilometres an hour     $400 (loss of licence )
More than 40 kilometres an hour but not more than 45 kilometres an hour     $510 (loss of licence )
More than 45 kilometres an hour but not more than 50 kilometres an hour     $630 (loss of licence )
More than 50 kilometres an hour (dangerous/careless driving charge and possibly others and instant loss of licence)

I went past a police speed camera van the other night with and set it off doing 25Kph, Perhaps because I honked the guy flashed me, it was sneakily mounted just past a pole mounted camera.
I also spotted one last night that did not have his tail lights on which is apparently mandatory.

Ahh very interesting reading.. I have noticed all vans have had the tail lights glowing dimly except this one last night.

No faster than 40KPH I believe.. I usually sit around 30KPH for safe measure as at that speed I can stop instantly.

I thought the posted limit applied (50 usually) but as soon as you are over that you are liable for a ticket?

Within 250m of a school the tolerance drops to 4kmh so you get ticketed at 55. Some places have lower limits and paradoxsm has the right idea, our local school is surrounded by so many SUVs that you can't see the footpaths.

what i find facinating is that if the government was really serious about stopping speeding they would require all vehicles to have speed limiters at 100kph, or is it just a sham and they just want the revenue. Most cars of the last 10-15 years are computer contolled and even some cars already have speed limiters ( some jap imports )

The problem with speed limiters is that by enforcing them, it adds extra costs and also creates a blackmarket for cars that have the chips disabled, or an aftermarket with devices that disrupt the limiters.

Still a good idea though, but the people who are determined and in many cases are the guys who will actually do the damage will remove them (just look at drink driving where people know its dangerous but choose to get behind the wheel anyway).

So, in a 50k zone, I should be OK driving 60 and in a 100k zone, I should be OK driving 110? Thanks for clearing it up for me. Of course, there is the school zone, where there is zero tolerance.

This is the important part

"In some circumstances exceeding the speed limit by less than 11km/h will pose road safety risks."

then you could be ticketed. "Zero tolerance" in the school zone means that if you are doing more than 4km/h over the limit you get ticketed. The only reason for a tolerance is to allow for speedometer variation. Most car speedos waste precision at legal speeds to show some ridiculous speed at the top end.

You would recieve an infringment notice for 60 in a 50k zone, technically you can still be ticketed for 55km in a 50k zone as the limit is 50kph not 55kph. there is an unofficial 10% variance, this stems from years ago with old cable dirven speedometres and there was a small measure of variance, the Ministry of transport used have speed check days as well as there were plently of fixed distance measuring points to check yourself. However with modern cars and electronic metering this 10% variance doesnt really occur. You would get away with 110 in 100 zone but you could get ticketed for 60 in a 50. Also one big thing to factor in regardless of getting a ticket or not, it TAKES LONGER to stop at 60 than at 50 and that could mean the differnce between an injury and a death.

You are ok doing up to 59 in a 50K zone in usual circumstances though an officer may ticket you if there is any reason.
You are ok doing up to 109 in a 100Kph zone before getting ticketed.

Most cars engines would explode when they got 75% of the way there. Cars are not made to be super-reliable 20 year lasting devices. Most Toyota's and some Nissans get pretty close though.

Fine providing that the schools have signs saying that there is a school close. I pass two schools every day on my way to work and the only sign is the one on the front gate. In Ozz the schools are well sign posted and flashing 40K signs operational between 8.00~9.30 am and 3.00~4.30 PM unlike NZ police which are advocating a 7.30am ~ 6.00 PM blanket tax collection times.. Monday to Saturday..
