This is for those of you who participated in Geekzone’s experiment with Webpass.io.

As a website owner, I’m curious what peoples experiences with Webpass.io on Geekzone. Did you like it? Did you understand how it was supposed to work? Other experiences and feelings about installing a plugin to automatically log you in to websites when you visit for the purposes of removing ads?

I really like it. It is not an automatic login system. No login is required to gain subscription benefits and that is the true beauty of the system.

Many other things are possible because of this, including privacy protection etc, although my understanding is those have not been fully implemented at his stage.

I am not associated in any way with the product. I'm just an over-enthusiastic tech nerd when it comes to this. I suspect other tech nerds will feel the same about it. It is a really elegant solution for a set of complex problems affecting users and publishers.

I want webpass to work so I can pay subscriptions with it. I like the model so I'm prepared to put up with a small financial disadvantage to encourage it.

I have had no problems with using it so I'm confident it will work well when I eventually have to pay.

Webpass is a more efficient means to remove ads and it works very well. But that is a minor benefit for me because ads are already blocked.

The only issue I have is that webpass is moving very slowly which suggests to me that this venture might well fail. Where are the partners?

It’s most definetely a login system. You login through them and then each participating website submit a token they receive from your browser back to Webpas who then verify your session. The websites receives a ID that is unique for you, but only used on one domain. That could jsut as well be used to log you in to a website such as this one (given that you associate you Geekzone account with your Webpass.io account once.)

There is nothing about the service that would protect your privacy in any way. Not really. Participating websiets will remove ads, but that is about it.

I integrated my own blog today. Took about two hours. Webpass.io subscribers will get half a day early access to new articles plus enjoying ad free experience. in exchange for a portion of their Webpass.io subscription fee. The only problem is, that accoriding to the Google Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-on Catalog they only have some 160 active users.

I’ve been trying to get Webpass.io to reveal their list of publishers. I suspect that it is less than 50. But they’re not really talking about it; a blog and news search don’t reveal many hits for “Webpass.io” so they may not be pushing it to publishers just yet.

I've had a webpass.io subscription for several months now. Does anyone else at Geekzone?

I'm paying USD 5.50 a month which is 5.00 plus a 0.50 transaction fee. At the moment, I don't mind paying a premium if it gets to Geekzone.

So @freitasm, how much is Geekzone getting each month?

Not many paid subscribers but a few here and there. The % of visitors using webpass is small.

I've been playing with other platforms too - but without the subscriber advantage we can give webpass visitors. For example Flattr and Brave. The difference is that unlike the PayPal and webpass subscriptions we don't know who the Flattr and Brave users are, so those can contribute but don't get a "subscriber" benefit.
