News site launch plans revealed
So what do we think? I like the idea and would be prepared to support it in principle if the subscription fee is not ridiculous. Something like this is way overdue.

Maybe. I have not seen much evidence that we have quality journalists here to begin with but perhaps they are just suppressed by the smoke screens of Churnalism etc.
NBR has proven that subscription sites can work, people will pay for quality content.
Traditional media can't deliver that quality content as they have to deliver to the lowest common denominator of click-bait news headlines
The named journalists are a bunch of light-weights.
Rod Oram is no lightweight, but he isn't journalist.

We have some excellent television journalists here, they just are not allowed to exercise their craft.

Then how would you know they were excellent?
That isn't worth answering.

Mediaworks is a good example of dollars before staff and dollars before news...they are a shocker. Wouldnt surprise me if they shutdown next year at the rate they are going. Sad cause NZ needs competition.
I remember when Dominion and Evening Post were merged in Wellington and all the promises that were made to the readers....now the DomPost is half of one of the two in size....
there has to be a paying model that the masses would subscribe to that costs less then the hardcopy version by far.

NZHerald is $10/month for the digital edition. https://nzherald.digitaledition.nzme.co.nz
Or you can get it - and lots of other publications like WSJ, FT, etc via Pressreader at USD30/month/publication (or USD0.99 for a single copy of a newspaper). Magazine pricing might be different, I've never looked.

Don't hold out much hope, if it works it will be sold then killed, if it doesn't work it will fail within two years.

We have the same percentage of good journalists as any other developed nation.
The problem is digital editions are just the hardversion, scanned in and view able on a computer. They are therefore not in a format that is easy to read and navigate through. I wouldn't pay for that. I would prefer to pay a bit more and get the actual newspaper, so it isn't a solution.
Maybe they need to look at something similar to Flipboard. These newspaper apps are a better format, but lack a lot of the stories, and filled with opinion pieces and advertorials, where you don't know what you are really reading.

At the moment, but according to these media companies, if the merger doesn't occur, that will likely go down.
