Hello.

I just put my car on TM and got this response from a boat crew.

Sounds like a scam to me can anybody throw some light on it.

Thanks

The response is below.

Hi there, Thank you for getting back to me. Can you assure me that it's in good state and that i will not be disappointed with it??. I wanted to buy this for my son in fiji, but the issue is I am away at sea at the moment, i work with New Zealand Oil and Gas (NZOG) and we are presently offshore in New Zealand Taranaki Basin on kapo project. The contract is strictly no call due to the lack of reception on the sea area. But I'm able to access email anytime as we will make use of laptop so my only quickest payment option is PayPal as i can send money via PayPal anytime.Since I'm requesting this transaction to be done via PayPal, i will be responsible for all the paypal fee/charges on this transaction and if you don't have an account with paypal, its pretty easy, safe and secured to open one. Just log on to www.paypal.com. I hope we can make the purchase as fast as possible? I have a mover that will come for it once payment clears and they will get it to my son's location safely.   If my mode of payment is accepted kindly email me with the information below to proceed with the payment.

1) More pictures
2) What is the condition?
3) Are you the Original Owner?
4) Your final asking price ?
5) Your PayPal Email Address
6) Your Picked Up Location Address

Get back to me with your address so i can forward to the shipping company to schedule an appointment with you for pick up. I have a private pick up agent that will come for the pick up after payments has been made. So i look forward to hear from you soon.

Tell them you can only accept payment by Western Union.....

I had virtually the identical email when I was selling my wifes car about 2 years ago, because it made all the sense in the world to ship a $1800 Hyundai to Dubai......

Report it to TradeMe - they will usually follow up and try and alert other users of these scams

So... these scams rely on you believing them that they've paid you via paypal rather than looking in your paypal account to confirm payment, and then going ahead and getting yourself out of pocket.

Man, people are dumb!

Nope, end up with hardship story and needing to pay for the courier locally as they couldn't do a money xfer to them via the method (paypal) so you can WU them and 'ill top you up'

An ex had a similar response to a car she was selling on TM years ago.  Not hard to recognise it as a scam, and even easier to Google a sentence or two to see countless other reports of this scam (although when you really want to sell something and get a bite, it is hard to let it go to be fair).

Ask for a fully refundable deposit of $100 before further details can be given due to trademe terms and conditions because of PayPal NZ rules.

The fact alone that he wants to do it via PayPal would concern me. What say he initiates a PayPal claim to get the money back after he has the car (assuming that he wanted to actually buy a car that is)? WHy PayPal instead of bank transfer?

Taking into account the rest of the details that make it clear it's a scam, I'd be tempted to have a bit of fun with the guy. "Actually mate, there's something about the condition of the car I didn't mention in the TM ad. It uhh... it smells strongly of excrement and has several blood stains on the upholstery. Don't ask. Are you still interested?"

So once you're on the hook, he suddenly finds out that his courier requires a big deposit that he's unable to pay. He just needs you to transfer the courier's fee by Western Union and he'll totally pay you back afterwards.

Honestly, who falls for this stuff...

I love some of the details in the other versions:

I am buying this for my first son who just graduated on top of his class at Aviation University in Western Australia ,I want it to be the perfect graduation gift for him and am making it a surprise package ... Due to the nature of my work i am a very busy man working all day, am a (Operating Manager) am presently on-board, i don't have access to my bank account online as am not with my credit card details here
