Am thinking of getting an electoronics device off a guy in Australia, is used, costs about NZ$500.

Am i likely to get done with duty charges for this?  It's one item for my own personal use, not to onsell.

Duty or GST?

Any goods imported into NZ with a collectable GST value of over $50 require GST to be paid. You may also need to pay duty on the goods but this depends on what the item is. Some goods have no duty - others do.

further to this, surely some geeks must have bought expensive stuff in from overseas?  Have you actually been nailed with GST charges?

This area seems kinda murky to me.
