I received this a few days ago, can you believe it is real? I've never used the Send it Now service, so I was sure it was a sophisticated phishing email. I used the contact form on the NZ Post website and uploaded a PDF of the email. Turns out it is a real email, but was meant for the sender of the item I received last year, not for me. Who in their right mind would deposit money into an account with such a generic name? It also included an .xls attachment (sure, I'll open that too).

Dear Customer

We recently sent you an email regarding your Send It Now online booking service which may have caused some confusion. We've investigated the matter and regret to inform you that the email was sent in error due to a system update, we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

During this investigation, we also discovered that the orders you placed between October 2017- April 2018 have outstanding balances. Please see the attached spreadsheet for a list of these orders.

We encourage you to check your credit card statement (on the order date) for the payments immediately. If you find the payments, or have made payment since, please reply to this email (senditnow@nzpost.co.nz) with proof of payment or call 0800 767 840 and we will update our records.

If you have checked your statement and can confirm payment has not been made for the attached order numbers, we'd appreciate it if you could please make payment via internet banking by 25 June 2018. Please use the attached order number/s as the reference when making payment to:

Account Name: ECL Credit Cards

Please deposit the funds into our account listed above at your earliest convenience, and no later than the 25 June 2018.

We have thoroughly investigated the cause and want to give our reassurance that we always take the appropriate steps to protect customer information.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. If you have any questions, please contact a member of our team on 0800 767 840.

the email looks fine except it was a mistake to send it to you. if you're expecting the email i don't think there's much confusion. this is one of the services offered by nz post..

I'd likely have also come to the same conclusion. It's requesting money and it uses a generic account name ("ECL Credit Cards"). I'm not surprised that Skolink thought it was phishing!

I to received one and I thought it was a scam, 6 months after I sent a package they send me an email that vaguely threatens to send me to a debt collector (that is it gives me a deadline).

Very poor service from NZ Post, I was a customer before this event, but I have found their approach to this to be unacceptable.  They made the mistake, and they are not even sure if it was paid or not, they tell me it is my responsibility to check my records 6 months after the event.

Before coming to me like this they should be 100% sure.  And why is it not listing a NZ post bank account?  They didn't even say what it was, they just give a date and a value.  Pathetic.

ECL stands for Express Couriers Limited. They started/part owned Courier Post before it was consumed into NZ Post.
