I expect the Minister will announce complete agreement between the key stake holders & that work will commence almost immediately. As she is making the statement in the Square it's going to be a good news story.

I expect that in two years' time there will be a lot of controversy about the lack of progress on the repair job. This will be blamed on:

1.) 'Unforseen' problems with the re-use of existing stone.

2.) A lack of specialist building labour to carry out the work.

3.) At least one key contractor will abandon the job for some reason.

And other issues will emerge:

Hotel operators will complain that the stalled repair job on the Cathedral is depressing bookings.

Tourists complaining that the Square is a boring construction zone as other buildings are being demolished or repaired.

There is also a rather large gorse bush to be removed. Guess that experts will have to consulted whether the roots of the gorse bush are contaminated with asbestos residue. Once those experts submit their report it will be sent out to be peer reviewed in Australia and the UK. Final approval for removal of the gorse bush expected by April 2019.

:-) I was thinking 2,4,5T  The days of spraying gorse are a distant memory. When you walk through it, do not stop, it'll be fine!

Yeah, back in the day, farming people would put all sorts of sprays into a solo back pack sprayer & away they'd go. It was even a popular job for some kids/teens.

We had a large tank, maybe 1400 x1400 x 1400 on a sled towed by the tractor, fun days.

People build big Cathedral in which to worship God:

Immediately after consecration in 1881 God smacks the top off it with an earthquake

God smacks the top off it in 1888 with an earthquake

God smacks the top off it in 1901 with an earthquake.

God smacks another part of the top off it in 1922 in an earthquake

God smacks it around a bit in 2010 in an earthquake.

God belts the hell out of it in Feb 2011 in an earthquake

Amidst discussion about whether or not to fix it, God belts the hell out of it a couple more times, just to be sure.

Now they're going to try to make it God-proof.

Yep! And when someone uses number 8 wire they actually want to repair or fix something. The most positive thing Megan Woods could come up with was to say it would be interesting for kids to watch a cathedral being built. I can just imagine the conversation among a family starting something like this:

'Hey kids, it's scorching hot day today, would you like to go to Jellie Park and jump off the diving boards & go on the hydroslides, or go & have a look at the Cathedral to see how many stones have been laid in the last month?'

I suppose 0 is a number. (That would be my guess!)

Luckily mines still young enough that she won't have a choice laughing I work a few mins walk away from the Cathedral, I'm looking forwarding to making it my meal time routine of checking out the work on the Cathedral. I'll be close to 40 by the time its finished though frown

They've taken so many years I would think the horse has bolted on this. Now they are relying on 'build it and they will come' philosophy. But, this is not guaranteed at all.

Tragically inept, Christchurch is a shadow of the place it used to be. Lost it's heart and never regained it.
