Her: My mouse isn't working. It's a cordless one.

Me: Is it rechargable or does it take batteries?

Her: Oh. I don't know.

Me: Does the red light work underneath?

Her: It doesn't have a red light but it has a green button.

Me: ?! Let's see... [removes battery cover]

Me: See those batteries? Try changing them for new ones.

Her: OK...

[later]

Me: I see your mouse is now working.

Sigh.

Ha ha.

I had a similar conversation with a colleague a few months ago, except he was extremely colourful in his description of the "failed" hardware. A short time later he was very embarrassed...

I was trying to help someone setup a RDP connection, over the phone a few weeks ago.

ME: (describes steps to enter remote computer details)
OTHER PARTY: (enters information. Tries to connect. Fails.)
OTHER PARTY: I've entered the information you told me, but it's not working. What's going on?
ME: Go to a web browser and type in www.google.com
OTHER PARTY: It doesn't work.
ME: Can you receive or send emails?
OTHER PARTY: Not right now. I'm not on the internet at the moment though.
/me /headdesk
ME: What type of internet do you have?
OTHER PARTY: Dial up.
ME: Okay, I'll ring you back on your mobile, and we can connect to the internet and try again.
(hang up, call other party on mobile)
OTHER PARTY: Does this need the internet to be connected for it to work?
/me /headdesk
OTHER PARTY: It works now, thanks very much!

Invisible! Thats so cruel, how are we suposed to flash the laser into an unsuspecting collegues eye.

I had a similar problem with my telephone head set, changed the batteries, and it still didin't work. Hmmm, oops. Headset button was off. haha.
