For years have been recycling our "single use" shopping bags to daily scoop up our cats litter tray poo and then placed them in the general rubbish. But now that "single use" bags are on the out, and rightly so, we are looking at a more Environmentally Friendly way to go about this.

Note: our cat is 13 years old and wont toilet outside as we taught her to use a litter tray whilst living in inner Sydney.

You can compost certain types of cat litter and these are the biodegradable types: paper, wood or grain based products which you compost using a normal but DEDICATED compost bin.

Two problems I have ascertained from research; 1) biodegradable litter = expensive & 2) these types of compost do not reach high enough temperatures to kill excreted cat diseases.

Thoughts please

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I just used to use the water soluble crystals and flush the litter.

I think you can substitute other wood products - e.g. fire wood pellets which are cheaper than eco kitty litter despite being much the same thing.

Can you bury the waste say 100mm deep in an area of the garden that you wont disturb. It won't reach 72C, but it will decompose, and surely the diseases can't stay alive in that environment for years on end?

There's some wood pellet based ones at mitre 10, comes in a 10l bag....but it's the same stuff they use for wood fires....

My partners cat is fond of befouling bark covered gardens.  I suggest that as a substrate.  Then dump it under a hedge or shrub in the garden, which is where the cat would go in the first place if it was outside trained.  Bark is cheap and is also a waste product.  If it's fresh enough it has a piney smell.

We use this, used to buy Pussydo until we realised that the above is the same thing for much cheaper. You can purchase a pussydo tray to help with the above, so that the saw dust that has broken down due to cat pee can be sifted .

We have a plastic scoop instead of using a bag. Also with the litter, it can be reused around lemon trees etc. Also if you wash it down and create a small pile, what is stopping it being reused when nature (eg rain and sun) cleans it.
