I only came to realize this NZ group existed, the flat Earthers, because they held an expo today.

Their very strange webpage.

If I didn't know better, I'd say they were all mentally disturbed :)

Below's a great US flat-earther who built a rocket to prove the Earth was flat.

The problem was any commercial airliner flew higher than his rocket.

Still you got to love the determination.

Wow, $250 for a weekend pass + $18 booking fee! That's a lot of money to listen to some whackjob morons when I could just watch them on YouTube instead!

I have a flatearther at work. To be honest though I am not really sure if he really is deadly serious or if he is just messing with me.

Too much spare time and our failing education system is probably partially to blame. These people have the right to vote!

I thought one of the tenets of flat-earthism was that the Southern Hemisphere didn't exist, and all the artefacts are a product of a vast pro-globe conspiracy.

In which case, any flat-earther going to a conference in Auckland would have to become part of that conspiracy.

Or is flat-earthism just a great laugh at the expense of nutty conspiracy theorists, like the Church of the Great Spaghetti Monster is a piss-take of religionists? The $250 entry fee seems to support that.

How Eratosthenes calculated the Earth's circumference 2,200 years ago

He used "sticks in the ground," walking, and basic maths to figure it out

...and the flat Earth explanation, "the sun is really small, and very close"...

t's a common misconception that Eratosthenes was measuring the circumference of the round earth in his shadow experiment. Eratosthenes had simply assumed that the earth was a sphere in his experiment, based on the work of Aristotle. He was actually measuring the diameter of the flat earth (distance across), which is a figure identical to the circumference of the round earth (distance around).

We can use Eratosthenes' shadow experiment to determine the diameter of the flat earth.

Syene and Alexandria are two North-South points with a distance of 500 nautical miles. Eratosthenes discovered through the shadow experiment that while the sun was exactly overhead of one city, it was 7°12' south of zenith at the other city.

7°12' makes a sweep of 1/25th of the FE's total longitude from 90°N to 90°S (radius).

Therefore we can take the distance of 500 nautical miles, multiply by 25, and find that the radius of the flat earth is about 12,250 nautical miles. Doubling that figure for the diameter we get a figure of 25,000 miles.

The earth is physically much larger, of course. A circle with a diameter of 25,000 nautical miles across is simply the area of land which the light of the sun affects, and represents the area of our known world.
