Here in Australia there are lots of TV advertisements for 5G …. just Telstra at the moment. Telstra has just started selling 5G devices, and Optus isn't too far off. Vodafone is set to follow with its own 5G network rollout in 2020.

Telstra says it " … is hard at work building its 5G network, having switched on over 200 sites since August last year across ten cities. These include parts of Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart, Launceston, Toowoomba, and the Gold Coast.
Telstra intends to launch 5G in 25 more cities across the next 12 months, including all major regional cities in Australia. This will bring Telstra 5G to a total of 35 cities, initially."

Heaps of huge roadside billboards lauding 5G too.

@Rickles You could have made the thread title ' Telstra 5G ' or ' Australia 5G launching soon '

Here is a link off to a 5G speedtest on Telstra AU

NZ would be the same, if spectrum was available..

Give aus have totally banned H, it needs even more hype behind it too...

I suspect 5G is the holy grail for Australian telcos, in terms of resolving the disastrous NBN rollout for many disgruntled customers that aren't realising the potential of their fixed fibre or HFC network.

There is plenty of spectrum - Spark will deploy 5G initially in the 2500/2600 band where they already have existing management rights.

The problem right now is their technology provider is banned. 😂

Given b7 is quite heavily used... I'd argue that would be silly.

20mhz isn't enough to go 5g.that's just shooting yourself in the foot pr wise.

I didn't see 5G mentioned in the budget.

What is the situation here? It seems to be getting started in a number of places and we seem to be falling behind?

Nothing stopping the telcos accessing spectrum in the short term for 5G at 3.5 GHz right now. Long term is a slightly different matter right now

There is advertising here in NZ for future 5G, but it is either Spark brand building or Huawei trying to sway public opinion against the GSCB.

Is the need for 5G as great in NZ as AU? We obviously have so much surplus mobile spectrum/capacity in places that Spark/Skinny are having a bit of capacity fire-sale in the form of fixed wireless.

If 5G will increase fixed wireless then the Govt may find it self in the position where it wants to put the hand-brake on so as to maintain momentum in the UFB space and get some payback on its billion dollar investment.
