I wont mention which site, but a relatively well known and popular torrent site was blacklisted and added to AU based ISP blocklists.

So the admins of the site registered a new (extremely similarly named) domain and AU users can just connect via that instead.

Business as usual.......

Surely govt IT staff have more brains than just "lets block that domain, that'll stop people".....  especially when it comes to torrent sites etc, most users are slightly more clued up to how the internet works.

From people I know over there you just use 8.8.8.8 as your DNS and everything works fine.

The government doesn't maintain a centralised blocking system - there is no great firewall. They simply get court orders to the ISPs to block it through whatever technical means they deem sufficient. Because they don't get paid for it, the ISPs do it the cheapest way possible - a DNS blackhole or redirect.
