So I sent my cat to the vet for a teeth clean. First time I’ve ever done this. I was charged $550 which I feel is waaay over the top. So I am wondering if there is anyone on here who has also done this for their cat and what you were charged.

Did you ask the cost before the teeth clean was started?

Ouch - that seems steep. Never had the job done so no idea what a normal cost is.

I assume that there was a general anesthetic.

Maybe some extractions??

Can you get an itemized invoice.
I would be asking lots of questions.

As an aside the running question (poor taste as it may be) by me in my household whenever a cat expense comes up is

"Can we get a new kitten instead - it will be cheaper" - no one has let me yet...

I was told the cost would be $500-600 when it was thought by the Vet he would need a tooth removal. Turns out he didn’t need that and a clean was sufficient. So when I got the final bill I asked why the price had not reflected the fact the tooth removal wasn’t performed. The nurse said “oh it would have been $800 if he had the tooth removed.

They have to make the cat unconscious usually I think. Pretty sure our cats cost about pretty close to that. Unlike humans, medical care for animals isn't subsidized by the tax payer, so you are paying the full price for everything.

It's about that for our German Shepherd as well.

i asked about this few weeks ago at my vet, teeth cleaning for Dog however, cost was 350$

Yeah, our little dog went in for a dental checkup and ended having a few teeth extracted. We didn't get a lot of change from $1200...

I asked my wife - sedation would be the highest cost. The more plaque, the longer the sedation and the higher the cost.

Did they have to prescribe any antibiotics?

Did they need to monitor it after general? (Especially if older or breathing problem)

Did it need to stay during overnight?

Last dental job for one of my cats was about $300, had to have two teeth removed as well (she swallows the crunchy buscuits instead of crunching them ... bought bigger biscuits!)

Most the cost is because they have to sedate them for even a plaque scrape.

I've found rural vets to be cheaper than city vets, they nearly all do small animals as well.

Thats about normal..did my small dogs last year and it was about that. It does depend on what they find eg number of extractions/stitches etc.

There were no extractions. Just a scale and polish. Same day visit. In at 9am had him back at 2pm. @Sleemanj thanks for posting your estimate. My cat needed bloods which I see yours didn’t. So that kinda works out similar then I would imagine.

We get the vet out periodically to do our horse's teeth. He has to come to us, bring a trailer mounted crush to contain the horse, put the head in a sling, sedate the horse (sometimes two or three times during the procedure). Usually cleans the sheath at the same time (if you don't know don't ask...). Takes a good hour and only costs about $300.

that matches what we have been charged in the past.

We put the cat on different dry food, bigger biscuits which they can't swallow whole. When the biscuits break it removes plague and we have not had to have the teeth cleaned again
