An alternative (depending on your use case and budget) is the MSR Guardian.

You can drink more or less any water you find after pumping it through one of those. It's expensive, but was designed for the US military so is very robust and is also self-flushing during use. I have one in our earthquake box.

There are less expensive (and usually not self-cleaning) versions from companies like Katadyn.
