hey guys,

My nice HP laptop is in getting fixed and I picked up an old one from a mate. It was a loan laptop and there is a internet filtering program called IRCAplus. Its pretty bloody annoying as pretty much not only are dirty websites blocked but so are pretty much everything including youtube.com..

So unless you have the password you cant uninstall it or change any of the settings.. I removed and disabled the service and removed it from the startup but then it somehow blocks your outbound connection via the browser.

So without a full re-install how the hell do I get rid of this bloody net nanny? And its chew's up the little amount of memory on the laptop.

Its and XP laptop the way with service pack 3.

Any help much appreciated.

Go into the browsers settings and make sure its not trying to use a proxy. if it is local software the chances are its trying to use 127.0.0.1

If it is net nanny then you need to find out what the password is. It is designed to stop you getting around it. Quite sure it is possible but would not be at all easy as you have found out.

Otherwise get your mate to put in an exception for you. It is managed on the web so he can make the changes remotely.

You may need to run the install over the top if you have now broken the web by trying to rip it out.

thanks for your repies guys,

Its not using a proxy as I have found out and then I also found out that this hasnt been used for over a year and they dont know the password and he told me to do a full restore!

So that could be my last option unless I can find something to crack the pwd.conf file.

cheers...... man i want my laptop back!

They can just recover their account details from the web site. Otherwise yeah I think a full reinstall is your only way out.

What are you prepared to do to get rid of it? If you have access to the administrators account. Create a new admin account,(Control Panel > User Accounts) log off your current admin account, log on to the newly created admin account and change password on the old admin account, (Control Panel > User Accounts) then change old admin account to a limited user account. Hopefully that will give you "rights" to uninstall ircaplus.  Not saying it will work but if you are considering a clean install you must be pretty desperate for a fix and these are pretty desperate measures.. Try at your own risk!!

Good luck.
