I did it once but was able to have it sent privately. Sender had to go to some trouble to acquire forms needed for lithium battery and I got nailed for taxes at this end but it all worked out reasonably well. I wasn't trying to save money in the first instance, just get a machine I couldn't find here, but I still saved money, even with the tax hit.

Do American laptops still have Wi-Fi compatibility issues or is that a thing of the past?

Yes. Not all WiFi will work in New Zealand. If it doesn't work on some bands there isn't anything you can do.
And yes, warranty claims will not go well.

Yep I had that when I imported a cellphone many years ago. Had to pay customs duties on arrival, and when it developed a fault, I would have had to pay tax to send it back/receive it back both times.
In the end a friend bought it from me (the fault was something relatively minor that didn't bother him).

What is a client code and why do I need one?
A client code is a unique number that identifies individual importers and exporters and is required as part of the import process for shipments valued at NZ$1000 or more. To apply for a client code:
complete the form NZCS 224: TSW Client Registration Application (DOC 534 KB)
I'd look carefully at regulations regarding shipping LiIon batteries. I had to send a Kindle back to Amazon US, I had to send express courier with the correct declaration. Amazon standard shipping got it here fine though.
Ive bought several off Amazon (mostly Asus).
Never had any issues with WiFi and they (ASUS) have an international warranty - not that Ive had to claim before.

Oh yeah that sucks.
I was going to send a Nintendo Switch to Australia, NZ Post insisted it was send via courier (becuase of the battery) and the cost was crazy!
