Time for a less serious topic.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/homed/garden/300349602/why-ditching-the-grass-could-help-your-backyard-thrive

Are lawns bad?

Im sure the leaf area exceeds most garden plants.

Relaxation good for mental health?

I don't know why Im posting this topic to be honest, its like where has this civilisation taken us when a media article like this appears.

So weeds are the way to go? Judging by my wintered weedy garden I’m more than making up for the grass.

I hate my lawn. But I don't want it three foot tall either. It's about the size of a large ornamental rug too which makes it even more infuriating.

I'm sick of my lawn getting mossy most winters and the upkeep. I've spent heaps of time on it, but at some point I'm paving or concreting one area we rarely used, and might do something other than grass for part of the back lawn too.

Here in Aotearoa we tend to cut our lawns too often and too short. This dries the near surface roots and promotes thatching, weeds and pests.

The tenants next door did not mow their lawn for a long time ( possibly 12 months ) Bugged the hell out of me until late summer when all the wild flowers were out and the grass was going to seed.

The grass moved in the gentle breeze like in the documentaries and in the finish I was quite jealous.

PS that was about 10 years ago and I still cut mine.

I like my lawns, adds balance and relaxation. The hedged off 25m x 8m area with 6 raised gardens and 4 fruit trees is a pain to mow tho

i hate the lawn , when the wife and i were looking for a house my first requirement was a very small lawn and gardens as i hate the activity of gardening. im not sure what happened but our house now has a 40 metre ivy hedge that i have to keep trimming and a lawn that takes 35 minutes to mow. i would concrete it in a heartbeat if the wife would let me.

My 'lawn' is no longer nice grass, its completely overtaken by various weeds, mainly Kikuyu and onion weed .
Onion weed is a bit smelly when I mow it

Its a pain in the a having to mow it , but its nice to have even in ts awefull state

I do like that fact that GZ has served me an ad for Masport Lawnmowers at the bottom of this thread.

Late last year I bought a place a little north of Auckland and noticed that during the dry summer months the ground under the lawn area was drying out enough to form huge cracks.  I couldn't see anything similar in the flowerbeds where there are shrubs, trees, etc.  Made me wonder about whether having it was worthwhile too.

No.

Typical nonsense lifted from The Washington Post by Stuff.

Ironically they had their begging banner at the bottom of the article saying We are the Ninjas of news. So you mean culturally appropriated black gown wearing assassins, who unquestionably do their master’s bidding?
