This subject has come up before in a slightly different context. Now I find myself in a position where I have to figure out how to get rid of probably more than a hundred (haven't counted) old VHS tapes. No-one seems to want these anymore. As far as I can determine, they can't be recycled. Every form of destruction spews toxins into the environment. Does anyone know if there is any disposal means other than landfill for these? I really hate to burden the environment with this crap, but it has to go somewhere.

Sticking them in a properly operated commercial landfill is probably the least worst option

I'm going to disagree. The tape is problematic, but the case and reels seem to be made of polypropylene, which is recyclable. There are also various metal parts which can be recycled.

Lots of chemically hazardous waste there. I'm trying to find a less irresponsible way of getting rid of them.

From southland:

http://www.wastenet.org.nz/Tools/DirectoryHome/VideoCassettes.aspx

"Disposal

If you are unable to reduce or reuse your video tape, the next best practical option is disposal to the regional landfill through your local refuse collection service."

If you really want them recycled, and are in Auckland, the below place will do it, at a fee of $1 each. Obviously would work out expensive with your quantity.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I am not in Auckland and could not afford it anyway. There may be closer to 200 tapes. I am a pensioner on a limited budget.

"then either recycled locally or sent to an accredited recycling centre overseas."

Dont be fooled into thinking recycling is all clean & green. It can sometimes make the issue worse by concentrating the toxins .
Stockpiling all the waste plastic in huge Ak warehouses is NOT recycling .
And sending our waste overseas is hardly NZ dealing with our own waste cleanly .

I'd bet alot of waste sent overseas isnt handled or disposed of cleanly .

So , even though you want to do the right thing , the realistic option is send them to the dump .

I disposed of some 250 tapes about 10 years ago and explored the same options. They ended up in the landfill.

It's a shame, but I guess that's where they are going. I wonder what problems this will create for people 100 years from now.
