hey all
I'm heading down to Wellington on monday (from auckland) and going to be visiting a friend in Wanganui on the way down, just wondering which is the fastest route going down?
Google Maps say go via Te Kuiti and follow Sh4 into Wanganui but I remember the last time I traveled that road it was really slow and winding. Other idea is follow Sh1 down to Bulls then sort of head backwards up the road to Wanganui.

Thanks in advance.

Bulls to Wanganui isn't far. It shouldn't take more than half an hour to drive.

Quite a few years ago when I lived in Auckland and drove down to Wellington on a semi-regular basis, there were a couple of places I'd avoid SH1 and save quite a bit of driving time.

The first was going via Matamata to cut out Hamilton - I drove this about 2 years ago going to and from Auckland and it still seemed like a good option then, but I don't know what inprovements have been made to SH1 between Hamilton and Auckland :-)

The second was to use the road on the Western side of lake Taupo (SH3) as it was originally built for logging trucks and is good quality with a number of straight sections and, usually, less traffic.

The work I do now has taken me from Wellington to Wanganui quite a number of times over the last few years and Alasta is spot on - Bulls to Wanganui doesn't take long.  As you've noted yourself, the Parapara's road (SH4 via National Park) is quite windy.  From memory, which is getting quite long now, it also doesn't have many passing areas if you get stuck behind slow traffic...

Have a safe journey!
