Does this story make sense? I thought cooling fans worked for people because we sweat and the evaporation cools us. I also thought dogs don't sweat, which is why they pant instead. Have I got this wrong? Dogs like breezes, but do they have a cooling effect? Does a fan work for a dog? Physicists and engineers, please clarify.

Wouldn’t do much for the lab that takes me for walks. His go to is plonking himself down in the sea. His fur is too dense for air to do much good.

You could use the cooling evaporative effect of an alcohol-based liquid - meth lab.

Thanks for a real reply. If you look at the article I quoted, the fans appear to be mounted on the backs of the dogs. This doesn't seem to make any sense to me, unless it is just a scam.

It absolutely makes sense from a physics point of view. It is convection, and while you point out humans sweat, this just makes the convection more efficient. Equally you will have a degree of air layer insulation having that disturbed will cool also. If the air is cooler than body temp it will cool, but the opposite occurs when the air is warmer than body temp.

We have owned dogs but don't currently have one. Many friends and family have dogs. I very much doubt that a back-mounted fan would have much real effect - in fact I suspect that all the gear holding the fan on to the dog would cause more heat build-up than the fan would relieve. Not sure I would call it a scam - more just a bad idea to separate gullible people from their money. Seems very Japanesy to me.

For a GZ-type suggestion/solution - how about some thermal paste and a heatsink? (Couldn't resist that).

Dogs don't sweat or cool themselves through their skin and fur.
