Help!

So I decided that seeing as my Norton’s Internet Security licence was up, I would try out Avast. Now the problems begin. Instead of completely removing Norton’s I removed it from start up (msconfig > Start Up > Tools) so I could revert to it in case of this sort of situation I am not suffering from. Basically IE and Firefox will not work, ‘page cannot be displayed etc’ on my broadband and CDMA data connection. I have now reverted to Norton’s and everything it fine again (removed Avast from start up).

Any ideas?

I might try and run Avast and Norton’s together to see if I still have this problem.

Ok Solved.

I booted my computer with both Norton's and Avast, updated Avast, then removed Norton's from startup and everything is ok again. It was weird as before when IE and FF where not working I could send and receive emails, pinging google was ok also.

Now I have problems with Word refusing to load, but Excel it working ok.

Grrrr COMPUTERS!!

Nevre run two antivirus at the same time. These software make very deep changes in a system.

Also probably Norton stops Internet access if some part is disabled to prevent unidentified malware tampering with its system.

You should never have two anti-virus applications installed at one time. You are guaranteed to run into problems.

Slightly related to the topic, when using security suite programs that include a firewall application and your planning to use it, make sure the Windows Firewall is off else you could run into some problems (speaking from work experience)

Ok I am now back in front of a PC so I can type more... In short both programs hook deeply into the system using special calls. For web traffic they emulate local proxy servers to scn web traffic, and both have firewall built-in (Avast calls it Network Shield and it's just a port listener bypass really).

Simply removing items from startup won't disable the programs because they run as a service, otherwise the PC would be unprotected until someone logs in.

So you only really must have one of those programs - never both. Avast is a good one and free.

There is a know related issue with using the latest versions of Avast and ZoneAlarm on Vista also - they conflict if the Web Shield component of Avast is running. To fix, turn off Avast Web Shield then turn up On Access Protection Control Resident Prottection to its max settings.

We had been running the same 2 programs (same versions) on Win XP2P2 with no problems at all until we bought a new Vista machine.
