Hi,

In the last few weeks I've noticed wasps congregating on the corner of our roof.

And also here....

East side of the house, sunny and not exposed to prevailing westerly wind.

Is this an alarming number of wasps to be one spot?

The roofing is what I call decramastic tile.

But I have no clue where those gaps in the roofing lead to.

Could they be nesting in the roof cavity?

There will be a nest inside that cavity. If you can put down some wasp powder that they walk through that should take care of them.

Has that gap in the roofing been done for any purpose?

Other than providing wasps a perfect hangout?

they are Asian wasps. nests are typically small. a squirt of fly spray will deal with them. just don't go falling of a ladder. or you can just leave them, they won't do anything to the house and they are not aggressive.

They'll get through a gap a whole lot smaller than that.

I had some under a deck and could not see the nest. I used the powder, took a couple of applications but worked. Might be worth trying but obviously call the experts to get to it properly.

I have done a couple of blasts of Mortein.

They were aggressive and the numbers have not dwindled.

sorry, i should have said not aggressive if left undisturbed. eg i get them building nests in the porch and walk right next to them without issues.

tho typically they nest outside under something rather than inside something. under a big leaf, under a table or chair etc.

most flysprays take ages to work. leave them for a while they should die off over a few days/week.

to add, if you have sprayed them and nailed the nest/queen, they are probably lost, they have no home. which is why they are hanging outside not on the nest.

I would leave them alone; they will disappear on their own.

I am allergic to wasps (but not bees) so their proximity disturbs me.

If you do spray the gap, wait until evening/night as they're less active then.

No way should you be leaving pests like that alone to build inside your house. That has to be one of the stupidest things I have read on here.

It depends on whether you're familiar with wildlife biology. It got too hot for these wasps because the queen didn't know beforehand that it would get too hot under that type of roof. Since she'll only survive the winter alone anyway, I would seal the hole if she's hibernating there.

Of course, as a human, you'd have to be able to handle that psychologically, but that's not the wasps' fault. 😁 Perhaps it's also because I grew up with swarms of honeybees, so I'm not prone to panicking, and I've even had to deal with hornets 50 cm from my head (though that was on a cool night when they were inactive but audible in the nest).

Sure, you can kill anything with chemical pesticides. That saves you the trouble of thinking. And I'm not allergic, although, as everyone knows, seven hornet stings are supposed to kill a horse.

Please feel free to try the Muppet(tm) Anti-Wasp-Procedure (MAWP) below and report back:

Hire a Mariachi Band. Tell them no matter what happens they must keep playing.

When they arrive, position them below the hive and instruct them to start playing. Then, set off a small firework next to the wasps.

Film what happens and upload it here.
