Hey everyone! So this maybe a hard one, but is there anybody from the Dunedin / Otago region?

We are thinking about moving to Dunedin area this year, could use a few chats with a local or two who know their way around those parts? Maybe could help with a few tasks locally one weekend before we arrive, nothing special (happy to cover any gas or such of course if it comes to that).

But yea, if you or anybody you know maybe from there, whom wouldn't mind sparing a few mins. Just reply back!

So would you say you live still nearby / go there / consider yourself a local?

What I am after, I want to ask about surrounding towns as Mosgiel, East Taieri, Maori hill, Sawyers Bay and such. Reason is we are looking at a few properties around, so if you actually live around, you could may be tell us a thing or two as locals. Things such as any inconveniences or conveniences in your eyes being a local if we looked at x area vs y area, or maybe things to be aware of? May ask for suggestions on lets say house inspectors from that area? I saw 3 there in the city from what google tells me. Maybe if we settled on a property and sent the house inspector, maybe we would see if we could ask you to drive up there and give your thoughts on it? Happy to cover something for gas and beers and happy to invite you to a bbq once we are settled in. :)

We are moving back to NZ after a long time and figured that its not a bad idea to ask if there are a couple of locals I could ask, that's all really. :)

there are no inconveniences, only houses that get sun, and those that don't.

Mosgiel - was considered more the retirement village of Dunedin, but is more becoming a mix of young families and older. Good local amenities 2 large supermarkets/decent enough schools etc. Personally a bit far out of town for me but plenty find the 20+ min commute fine if you work in town. Traffic backs up big time coming back into Mosgiel at evening "Rush hour"

East Taieri - really an extension of Mosgiel.

Maori hill - historically and still is one of the nicer parts of town. Close to town, but hilly, close to everything.

Sawyers Bay - a little out of town we considered building here but out families are too far away, you've got port chalmers just down the road as a service town type thing with a small supermarket etc.

I guess it depends what stage of life you're at too, like young family Mosgiel or Maori hill would probably suit better.

Others will disagree but the only areas I'd really avoid are North East Valley/ Woodhaulgh mostly for winter sun and closeness to students.

South Dunedin is a bit rough but there are no dangerous areas in Dunedin.

If you put an address in here you can change the date to june/july to see how it will get sun. https://shademap.app/@-44.3966,171.2415,15z,1776477023434t,0b,0p,0m

I'm not personally going to have time to do any running around for you but have you considered renting for 6-12 months to get a feel for the place and find something you like?
