it idles too fast at mid/normal temperature, about 1,300 - 1,500
platinum $park plug$ were replaced

the theory is that it is a faulty sensor, although not certain which one /where

Has the battery been disconnected recently ? Dont know if it applies to the Caldinas, but the 95 Cynos I had some time ago ran badly (inc high rev) after I had done some work in the car and had dicsonnected the battery. Turns out the computer in it gets reset and takes a few hours of running to work itself out again - after a couple days of going to work and back, everything came right.

oh, sorry, it 7AFE, 1.8. (yeah, yeah, i know, but it was bleeedy cheap!) run on 95Octane 'cos I live in the sticks, perhaps 98octane would help? i have had flat and disconnected battery once each, it's had a few 1hr or more trips, and maybe 2, 2hr trips since that-
i didn't need the 2lt or 4wd version
especially when they were twice the price of this '99
it has done 259,000km now
drives like new

Check for fault codes, Bridge T1 and E1 on the diagnostics connector. You will find plenty of info on google about what the fault codes are. Being an 7A-FE it should run fine on 95. Toyspade would be a good place to ask too.

Ha, I've just arranged to buy the same car listed today. Thanks for waiting until this afternoon to post or else I'd have been paranoid... :D

hey my celica gt-four had that same issue, 3sgte, 1998. Disconnecting the battery works, if you leave it out for a few hours, but the best way is to remove the ECU Fuse, in the fuse box in the engine bay. When you remove the ecu fuse, it looses power instantly... and you only wait 10 seconds and put it back in again, reset ecu, means the ecu has to learn all overagain, fuel air ratio etc.

But!, before you remove the ecu fuse, check to see if there is any fault codes first, as this will help you fix any potential problem. If you remove the fuse, you remove the stored faults...

I recently got the 4wd 2L Caldina mainly for skiing and the boot space.

It does around 600KM on a tank of gas, so is a lot cheaper to run and insure than my Impreza ever was, also has alot more power.

The only issue I have is that when I get up to around 80khm a whistling noise starts and if the car gets hit by wind it gets noiser so I believe it is a hole somewhere.
Any tips on finding it?

Does anyone know how to change the headlight bulb as well as its not in the manual and when I looked to see if its easy to get them out there is not room to work.

Loose side window coverings?  (I pulled mine off and the noise stopped).  Also, if you have roof racks, they can whistle as well.

I had a car once that in the right conditions would whistle through the rear view mirrors - I discovered the source when I put my hand on the mirror and it stopped...

Remove the connector to the bulb, the protective boot should come off, and there should be a metal clip sitting in there to undo.

you will need slim, slender hands ...

i would prefer to learn of any codes first

It should have a cap over the top and say 'Diagnostic' on the top of it. Should be in the engine bay, somewhere around the edge.

IIRC Toyotas of that age dont really have "learning" ecu's as such. If you post up a pic I will point out the diag connector.
