I know there are a few of you fellow musos around here. If you don't follow me on Twitter, you won't have heard this:

http://www.tall.co.nz/helpless.mp3

An acoustic snippet of an original song we are rehearsing, recorded tonight.

Watch this space, and in a few weeks I might post a full version with drums & bass as well.

Original was awful, recorded directly into Macbook built-in mic (LOL). I took that, and added:

Denoise
EQ (lows way up, mild scoop out of mids, and highs progressively notched up)
Compressor (compressed to hell and back) (note - compressed from a sound level sense, not the 'mp3 bitrate' sense
Vocal enhancement
Mic type correction
Stereo seperation
Reverb

Any flanging you can hear is a result of the above, on a poor quality recording.

yeps the compressor can give the flanging effect. recorded via the built in mic isnt too bad actually!

acoustic guitars sometimes sound better via a mic anyway i reckon :-)

look forward to more stuff from yalls!

Yeah sounds a bit more natural, you hear the guitar as a person sitting in front of the player would - with all the extra "room sound" of the guitar too.  Same goes for drums, I hate drums that don't really sound "roomy" (except some styles of metal where it's necessary)

I am sending a copy to Gitmo. Actually I could send you to Gitmo.

But, then again I have no musical talent, so you are better than me.

Yeah I was gutted I didn't have a USB or Firewire interface lying around to record drums and bass when our drummer turned up.

Anything beyond acoustic and vocals just degrades into a noisy mess in the Macbook mic.

In hindsight, there was a digital 4-track with dual condenser mics sitting there... oh well.

LOL can I ask why you would send a copy to Gitmo? Or is that just some Central American humour?

Man, I wish I had the gear/money/time... I've got musical ideas I'll probably never get to.

Yeah, gear is not cheap! We got everything we need for performing at a gear-less venue, but for recording decent stuff I still need a little more.

Not gigging yet. Plan to be in 4 - 8 weeks. First gig likely to be a spot at the Cabanas muso night, will do a 20-30 minute set, probably with 3 originals, and maybe a Foo Fighters or U2 cover chucked in for good measure.

Both drummer and I have pre-arranged gigs at decent bars here, but don't want to use those offers too soon!

Send me a track or two of your stuff. Heavier the better for me, just cant find a band full of hardcore mofos in Hawkes Bay looking for a 'thing' at the moment. This place is too small.

Email address on my blog sidebar.

Ah I'll just post a link to our first video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDTtreyDGwU&feature=related

It's very, very low-budget and comprised of mixed footage from our first NZ tour.

I was guitarist/vocalist (the dude with the beard) until mid 2007 when I quit. I've since been replaced and they band are doing very, very, VERY well without me hahaha. They supported Iron Maiden earlier this year.

Their new video is definately more high-budget.

Awesome man. Im so into that stuff. But being inexperienced and in a small town, I'm kinda limited to just going with what I can conjure up a band for, and at present I have the option of light rock originals, or pub rock covers. Both will be good experience I guess, but I know I will want to move onto heavier things asap!

Just acquired a Classic Vibe 60's Reissue bass, and a Tascam US-122L dual XLR audio interface for my Macbook. W00t. gas gas gas.

Who needs a dining room anyway? (Missing from pic is three more guitars, 15" P.A. bins, another amp, and various bits)

I got lucky. I used to drum in a band and was missing being involved in "the scene". I heard about a rhythm guitar position going through a friend and what started off as a bit of fun ended up a juggernaut of a machine.  I was only after a hobby and it turned into a chore :( was fun while it lasted though

Has anyone told you that you look like James Hetfield in your avatar, Tony?
