A roving flashmob is entertaining crowds around the Auckland CBD today, performing choreographed dances to a medley of songs as part of the TiVo campaign launch.

So far the group has performed at the Civic Centre, Britomart and Freyberg Square.

Around 100-150 people took part, making it one of the biggest flashmobs in New Zealand to date.

The flashmob will move on to Vulcan Lane and the Viaduct from 5pm.

Flashmobs are large groups who gather in a public place and perform for a short time before dispersing.

They are usually organised through viral or social media.

Looks more like a rent-a-crowd marketing exercise than a social network organised flashmob... but that may be arguing semantics.

Yes.. IMHO a flashmob is a non commercial non professional thing organised from the net (which normally people don't know each other)

This looked like it was a was a bunch of paid professional dancers who had practiced someplace else before dancing in the middle of Auckland.

But this is just my opinion....

From the cult of wikipedia...

A flash mob (or flashmob)[1] is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, then quickly disperse. The term flash mob is generally applied only to gatherings organized via telecommunications, social media, or viral emails.[2][3][4][5][6][7] The term is generally not applied to events organized by public relations firms or as publicity stunts.[8][4]

I just got confirmation this was commissioned by Telecom... So not really a 'flashmob'.

didn't you know, it takes approx 4 years for internet memes to spread to advertisers.

In about 2-3 years we'll be seeing lolcat and failblog advertising.

In 4 years we'll have advertising with Kanye West poorly photoshopped onto various products saying things like "Yo MySky, I'm really happy for you, but TiVo has the most successful PVR of all time. Of all time!"

It will be so original and fresh.
