Being a curious sort of person. Could you for example read a Sky card and then reprogram a blank with the Sky card settings?

The URL you posted was malformed: href='http://'http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.aspID... (you used two quotes, and missed the ? between asp and ID).

We could just filter all HTML from the posts, but then where would we have links? We could also add hours of verifications, but then where would be the fun?

I find amusing the fineprint in that page:

Possibly. The comments on the Jaycar site are probably referring to Australia (same backend just different prices). I have a smart card reader/writer unit at home but I haven't played with it for a few years. I also have a full size module with PC interface that allows you to plug the car into the decoder (or phone) and emulate the smart card via software. There was software around a few years ago to force that emulated the service SIM for early Moto GSM phones and there was also apparently software based SIM card so you could effectively clone a phone however this depended on the encryption used by the GSM network.

There have been numerous issues in Australia with the cards for Foxtel being cracked. In the old days you could do this by running software on your PC that emulated the workings of the smart card effectively giving you free TV. They have faced an ongoing issue with this and have replaced everybody's cards numerous times over the past few years with new encryption to combat this. Last I read about 2 years ago their cards could not be cracked but the fact Jaycar have this comment on their site suggests that it's a lot easier just to clone your card and sell it cheaply to friends!

I read an article a long time back about cloned cards in the US.

They can do over the network reprogramming of the cards to an extent, ie: channel remapping etc, and what they apparently did was a series of very small incremental changes which culminated in a channel remap during a big game..

ie: during the game - ring this number and you can win/buy blah blah blah...

of course.. only those with hacked cards got the message. the genuine cards were still viewing the pure feed.

Don't know exactly how true it is or how many chinese whispers went into it, but logically it's a potentially doable thing.
