I don't think we have had one of these discussions before and I might be showing my age.
I built my first computer in 1980 from an Electronics Australia magazine. It was called a DREAM 6800 (Domestic Recreational Educational Adaptive Micro-computer). It ran a Motorola 6800 and had 512 bytes of memory. The programming language was CHIP-8 and code was entered in Hex via a small Hex keyboard. I remember spending hours manually debugging code becuase there was no debugger and one simple mistake on the keyboard could stuff the program.
In those days I couldn't buy all the parts in NZ so had to import some chips from the US. I remember working a paper round for a year and I purchased parts as funds allowed. All up it cost me $277 which in 1980 was a lot of money.
