Hello fellow geeks
I have recently got a decent dac/ampifier so I started looking for hi end headphones, and I was shocked by the ridiculous headphone price in NZ. On pricespy hd650 and ie8 easily double Amazon's price and dt990, k701 etc don't even exist in NZ market, let alone more sophisticated models.

I talked to some of my oversea sources and seem like I can get them imported for pretty cheap. I would prefer selling them online for lower cost obviously, are there any other reliable platforms besides Trademe? I'm pretty new to this so any suggestion would be appreciated!

For online auction their are Trademe or Sella, apart from that - maybe consider getting an online shop built?
Can be done pretty ccheap these days if your serious about it.

I assume online shops have GST to pay while Trademe doesn't? Is that correct?

My understanding is anyone selling anything commercially/for profit over a certain annual threshold is required to pay GST . . .

if you trade and sell more than $40,000 of goods/services you will need to register for GST. doesnt matter where you sell your stuff from

note that if you import these headphones, you're going to get hit with GST. It applies to importing anything where the collectable tax is > $50 or so (and tax is calculated on goods + freight cost, and at 15% shortly).

But will you be able to sell them for a lower costs ?
How much mark up will you add to cover your costs ?
what about warranty issues ?
Are they the genuine article can you trust your suppliers ?

There are two big problems, already asked about, but just to make the point:

1.Warranty. You will be responsible for all queries and warranty repairs. You might not have a repair station from the manufacturer here and if the items are parallel imported then they might not even be supported in the country, which makes repairs impossible. Which means in case of problems you will have to either refund or replace - at your cost. I don't think you will be able to get the broken ones sent back to your parallel importer...

2.If they are coming from China, then make sure they are the real deal. Fakes are pulled out of Trade Me quickly, and you can get a big copyright problem in your hands.

As the owner of a pair of HD650s I would not have brought them on trademe or a one man band type outfit. I brought mine from a well known online retailer. When you are paying good money you want to be sure that there is support behind your purchase and also that you are getting the real deal.

I dont mind paying the extra $$ for this piece of mind.

Ive been looking for a high-end set of Grado's for a while now and thought about doing this myself. But what I found is no-one from overseas will sell a set knowing they are to be delivered to NZ.

The reason being they have a contract with a single company here to sell them and anyone in either the US or Europe known to have shipped them here will lose their own deal.
