Hello,

I know there are a couple of suppliers of movies on demand, TiVo (caspa service), Apple TV, iSky, Divx, but none of these suit my circumstances. I just want to be able to purchase the occasional movie without having to go to the DVD store.

TiVo - already have a PVR and don't want to change ISP.
Apple TV - Don't have HDMI input on TV, need something with composite.
iSky - don't want to have to buy sky subscription (but this would be handy as it is part of Orcons Ozone)
DiVx - Unless I use this on My PC it requires the purchase of a Soniq DVD player (I think)?

Does anyone know of any other services that work in NZ? Also any options or correction on the above would be gratefully received.

Apologies if I have missed any posts on this topic.

- You don't have to change ISP.

- You can get a Composite cable I think for it.

- DIVX is a file format and alot will play the format like a Sony PS3 and lots of other hardware..

Thanks for your reply. I though the the Caspa service only came from Telecom (rest of the Freeview component of the Tivo dosn't require an internet connection), but you are correct you can get it on any ISP. Just that Telecom is unmetered. But even so I just bought my PVR 6 moths ago and don want to throw it away so soon.

I will have to look into Apple TV further, does anyone have experience with it, is it any good?

I know DIVX is a file format, but they also have a VOD service, but is doesn't sound that good if Google search is to be believed.

Why not a Windows PC running Apple iTunes?

I have a Dell Zino HD in the lounge, mainly to run Windows Media Center, seeing it is the same size as Mac Mini. Sometimes we run iTunes to rent or buy movies.

HDMI and all, pretty good quality at the end of the day.

You could try Fatso? You order a DVD online, they courier it to you and you use a supplied courier bag to send it back when you're done. I haven't tried them, but maybe someone else here has?

freitasm: Great idea, but I don't have a pc with HDMI output, just a couple of laptops. Possiably I should look into a media device...

VinLew: Fatso requires advanced planning, which I am not usually good at ;)

Looks like there isn't an individual service available, it has to get it bundled with something else.

apple tv - old model has component, check trademe.

tivo - as said not tied to telecom.

the biggest issue is your data plan. if you have enough, you could do vpn + netflix for all the movies you want. netflix is USD$7 a month and a vpn is around USD$7-$10 a month. so for about NZD$20 you can watch as many movies as you want, providing you have the bandwidth.

Thanks John, I had discounted overseas sites because of the copyright issues, but I had not though of a web based VPN to get around them (in fact I did not know about web based VPN, learn something new every day).
