i was listening to news on 3 and supt Knowles mentioned that Rockhouse began to smell carbon monoxide (CO).

afaik CO is odorless! did i miss something here?

was he reading from his own personal notes? or reports? surely various experts would have gone through the reports with him before the inquest. to me, this is a huge mistake (unless if there is some sort of different CO that i dont know)

Seems to me Supt.Knowles is reading a summary of Rockhouse' statement, therefore using that persons words. If that's what was said, there's no mistake in the words being quoted, but a mistake in what was originally said.

It could be Rockhouse smelt something burning which, through experience, he associated with CO?

CO is odorless

"Where there's smoke, there's fire," meaning that if there is telltale evidence of some event, the event is probably occurring. If he can smell burning, then there is probably a fire. If there is a fire in a mine, there is probably CO.
