Approx 8.8 with a 4.1 - 7.3m (depending on area) wave from the tsunami.

Wow its massive. Ive watched for 10 minutes or so but the image of all the water just going over all that land with the fire still burning is making me go "wow"

It is reported at between 8.4 and 8.9, which i huge, but it was quite some distance away and under the sea. Also a tsunami advisory for NZ, but don't know when it will hit. Japanese modern buildings are largely built to withstand these, unlike the old building stock in Christchurch was, and Tokyo buildings look in to have held up well, so hopefully there won't be too many deaths. I think most deaths and damage may occur from the tsunamis. I think it must be one of the first times that tsunamis of this size have been captured on camera causing this sort of damage.

They will probably have aftershocks bigger than CHCH's first earthquake. I feel so bad for them right now, quake was bad enough but a tsunami is just rubbing salt into a wound. But they have way higher building standards I hear so they wont have as many flattened buildings I hope.

It looks like most of that fatalities will be from the tsunami. Could see people in sone of the cars being swept out to sea

There earthquake standards are about the same as NZ's, however they don't seem to have the same old building stock, and I expect their old at risk buildings were forced to be upgraded or demolished. Most, if not all the buildings that failed in NZ were not at the newer standards.

At this stage NZ has only been issued an advisory for a tsunami.

There have been some news articles who have incorrectly reported a warning for NZ.

Been watching the footage of the quake and tsunami. insane!

Correct. As confusing as it may be calling it a watch warning.

However now confirmed Marine Warning

A tsunami marine warning is in effect for New Zealand
A Marine Threat means strong and unusual currents are possible in the sea, rivers and estuaries.
No land threat is expected at this time
People in coastal areas should stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities)

Anyone know exactly where/how the Southern Cross cable lands in Hawaii? If they hit bad with the Tsunami, what will that do to the SXC landings? If it knocks the crap out of it, the majority of our international connectivity goes *poof*

I am in Tokyo now... Quite a shake here. Even here it felt bigger than the biggest aftershocks I felt in Chch after the first quake there. Have tweeted a few comments (@paulspain) but fortunately am well away from Epicentre and buildings here are strong.
