Today at around mid-day/1pm, we heard a helicopter REALLY low, I mean like, we could see the people inside the helicopter, it was that low, (Westpac rescue helicopter), so I grabbed my camera (as you do) and went to the beach (few meters from house) to have a nosey and spoke to some of the people across road who were there too, and she told me someone had been in a dingy owned by someone else down the road, and someone noticed shortly after seeing them out there, that no one was in the boat, so they called the cops. They had the Westpac rescue helicopter:

and 2 Coast Guard boats. The helicopter was out for about.... 20 minutes? just hovering there and stuff. Cops came and asked me if I knew anything, but I didnt know the people too well. Apparently a few weeks ago a surfer drowned out in this same spot. Do any of you guys have any info on what happened today? I've not seen anything on NZ Herald or Stuff.co.nz.

VinLew: Anything to do with this? http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/one-dead-small-plane-crashes-into-sea-4073221

No that was today, this thread originated yesterday.

Also the Manukau Harbour is the opposite end of Auckland from Orewa Beach.

It seems as though you answered your own question about what it was about. In-water searches are much easier from the chopper because you can see through the water quite a bit + cover more ground.
